GM Style

Bidet y'all! My name's Sam (he/him). I've been playin’ DnD for 8 years now and have DM’d for many different groups including a couple of long-term games in my time, with my current game set in Exandria going on for over 2 years now. Outside of sessions, I work as a martial arts instructor, am training to become a counsellor and play in a semi-professional Grunge/Punk band called Murderhobos (ikr) My two biggest inspirations as a DM are Critical Role’s Matt Mercer and Dimension 20’s Brennan Lee Mulligan, and my games tend to follow a similar play style to both of their shows: incorporating all 3 pillars of play (Exploration, Combat and Social Interaction), focusing on fostering an empathetic relationship between all members of the group, ensuring everyone gets a chance to shine and leaving plenty of room for both dramatic moments…and also giggling cus the Wild Magic Sorcerer turned into a sheep for the second time in 5 sessions (yup it happened once). I’ve had a number of years to hone my craft as a DM and be able to provide an experience for players that is engaging and entertaining. While I do like to keep my games structured so things feel meaningful, I do usually tend to operate under the rule that generally Story > Rules (within reason) and aim to weave each character’s backstory into the story somehow. I have been on the receiving end of bad DM experiences as a player, so I know how bad DnD feels and some of the pitfalls that can cause it, which I have become quite proficient in navigating over the years. In my job as an instructor, I always enjoy introducing new students to kickboxing and watching them find their own love for it in the process. This is very much mirrored in myself as a DM, I want my players to have a good time and hopefully learn something new in the process, particularly if this is their first experience of DnD. “As a DM, Sam is one of the kindest and compassionate people I’ve ever met, and will do what is needed to make everyone feel welcome at the table.
