About Chris (DungeonDad)

Greetings fellow adventurers! My name is Chris, or DungeonDad as my kids call me, and I am pleased that you have taken the time to learn a little more about me. I have been following, playing and leading immersive TTRPGs since 2002/2003. I have been a player, a lore/story writer, a Co-GM and a GM over the years. While the majority of my time has been spent playing and GMing D&D, I do have experience in other TTRPGs as well. I believe that a good story can take place in any genre, any time period and with any mix of characters. All you need is the willingness of the players to participate and a good GM that will listen, absorb and incorporate what the players give. Many of the campaigns and One-shots I run are from Homebrew worlds, while incorporating the rules and limitations of the RPG itself. I believe that having fun and discovering the world and the story together is most important, and I am always looking for that next hook to sink into the lore. Especially when that hook is provided organically by a player interaction or idea. I always strive to match the lore, story and atmosphere of the world to the story the players want to experience. I will also run campaigns and single sessions in pre-built worlds or even adapt your concept of a world or time period into a campaign for you. I have had the pleasure of playing and GMing for a multitude of different backgrounds and peoples. Helping everyone from a brand new beginner level to running campaigns for experienced veterans looking for something fresh from their normal table. I was able to play and GM a limited amount during my 10 year service in the Marine Corps and as a result, got to experience the love of the games, and discovery of them as well, from people of every mindset, personality and enthusiasm level. From playing in a campaign that lasted a year on the east coast, to playing almost nightly during a 6 month game in the middle east to keep our heads on straight. Even to now, running 2 home games, one for my friends and one for my family including younger kids. I know the love, escape and happiness this experience can bring, and how important our characters and stories become to us. I am a veteran, I am a family man and I am an avid fantasy reader, writer and fan. I have been to 23 countries and counting. I have worked in many different settings both through the military and through my life since then. I have a lot of experiences and exposure to cultures to bring to my stories. I believe this is what can set me apart from others. I value the expectations and desires of my players and want to inject as much immersion, culture, real-world feel and experiences as I can into the stories they are telling. Anything I can contribute to bring their story to life and make it feel as special as it can to them. Lastly, my disclaimer. Due to the life that I have lived and the experiences I have, I am Hard of Hearing to the point of it causing me to use a caption software that I have designed myself to integrate with audio interfaces and live caption. It utilizes different colors for different audio input channels and outputs. That being said I have had minimal to no issues with in person or virtual hosting. What does this mean for you? Well I may have a half second delay in a response to re-read the caption, and you will have to pick a color for your captions on my screen. Yay! Other than that, you shouldn't notice any difference in my ability to communicate and engage with you. I thank you again for taking the time to get to know me. I look forward to assisting you in creating your next story! Cheers Adventurers!

I became a GM because

I had a love of story writing and weaving, world crafting and introducing others to this game. Nothing beats the feeling of your players excitement at a reveal, a heart wrenching moment or watching your "Newer" players find their comfort zone and open up to their character.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Passionate, Intentional and caring

When I'm not running games I'm...

Making nerd style hats for characters, hobbies and themes. Making dice sets and accessories, watching a lot of different movies, reading fiction and science fiction. Or I'm playing a game or watching a show/movie

How Chris (DungeonDad) runs games

I am a balanced GM, and usually differ to my players and what they want. If the group is more of a crunchy combat simulator group, then I will design tactical combat encounters that are the primary focus. Is it a group that loves to role play and interact with themselves and npcs? I will make sure it is a healthy part of exploration of the world and the story. Does the group like a balance of many different aspects? I will do my absolute best to incorporate combat, role playing, backstories, exploration and the works. I generally design about 25-30 percent of my homebrew worlds and then allow for my players backstories, character choices and interests to influence the rest. I am always excited to see how the players and in turn the characters will help to shape the world and the lore. I am not particularly good at voices and accents, however I do my best to match the atmosphere and the moment by still giving it my best effort. I do not claim to be a professional voice actor or singer or any of the like. I am simply a one man Greek chorus that narrates the choices, actions, consequences and happenings of this wonderful story the players are creating.

My games focus on...

learning, comfort and fun. Everyone should feel welcome at the table, have their time to shine and find what works best for them. It is about having fun and working together to weave a great story. No matter what type of story it is.

Rules are...

there to provide the structure and basis for which the world operates. Not to tie down creativity or stop "thinking outside the box". The rules are meant to give you ways to make the things the players want to do, happen. Will it always work? No. But it's fun to try

Chris (DungeonDad)'s ideal table

My table style is first and foremost a place where everyone is welcome. They should feel that way by me, as well as the other players. So don't bring any negativity to the table. I teach a lot of new players so patience is another big one I harp on. Everyone will find their rhythm and style in time. Other than that, be ready to laugh, explore, and maybe cry. I love big worlds and big stories, so hopefully my players do to.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

exploration, big narratives, and innovation from the DM and the Players.

I love it when a player

Thinks outside the box, gets creative, finds their rhythm or experiences an emotional tie to their character. This fuels my soul and my love of this game.

My table is not the place for...

Judgement, hatred or discrimination. We are all different and have different views, morals and thoughts in life. At the table, we all live in this fantasy world and want to experience the stories and adventures. The losses and triumphs. Don't bring it down or stop the fun by being nasty.
