About me

Hi! I'm Steve! Dungeon Master for 15 years. My first books were second hand 3rd edition. I saved up for months to by them only to have 3.5 released soon after. I was very annoyed with a particular gaggle of sorcerer's by the beach. 4th edition I played a little but it was too different that I like many others left the hobby for a while. Of course, 5th edition being the latest and greatest I was reeled back in. I've tried many other systems since getting back into TTRPG's and took up collecting a great deal of TSR content. There are still quite a few I'd love to learn and try out! 5e D&D is what I currently play the most but I've found what I really enjoy are the Old School retro clones of older editions. My personal preference is for players who feel like they're adventurers trying to make their way and fortune in a strange land. 5e is more of a superhero power fantasy in a medieval setting. Fun, but it makes High Fantasy tricky and I find myself losing immersion because the players are so far above simple common folk. When I'm not running my own homebrew worlds I'm coming up with wild one shots for all my favorite players. My past times include stealing from Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, hoarding maps, collecting old game books, writing encounters based off 80's power ballads, teaching my kids to play table top RPG's, dusting off an odd amalgamation of gnomes, and song parody's.

GM style

My favorite thing to do in game is teach. Sometimes that's through roleplay, sometimes through combat. Many of the newer players I've encountered often forget class abilities, inventory, numerous actions during combat, etc. I always go over this in the session 0 but there is a lot of information and its easy to forget. The best reminder is putting people in a position in game where they can learn these skills. Goblins are excellent at teaching players about bonus actions, hit and run tactics, or things in combat you can do other than just attack your enemy. Social encounters can make background traits shine, like when the Folk Hero Fighter meets a local legend for the first time only to realize he's a bit of a legend himself! A traveling wizard can make an excellent tutor for any up and coming caster and just maybe they have a few tricks to help the rest of the party as well. My goals are to make both social and combat encounters have depth and provide choices that matter, to make an attempt at an NPC voice that doesn't sound like a cartoon, and make sure everyone has fun and a role to play! What to expect: Blend of tactical combat and roleplay, decision trees, AD&D inspiration, varied encounters, mild to heavy cursing.
