About me

You may call me Firelord Kai. Games and stories have always been the central focus of my life, and tabletop roleplaying allows me to bring these two core aspects together. I have been GMing for almost a decade and am looking to play many different systems so that I may find the perfect one to run my dream campaign. That aside, I have an appreciation for both narrative and simulationist play. As a hard rule, I don't play Dungeons and Dragons unless I absolutely have to.

GM Style

I'm a theater kid, and you'll figure that out pretty quickly. I'm a great improviser and pretty good at character voices. Beyond that, my secret pleasure is designing monster stat blocks from scratch and crafting intricate scenarios for players to adventure through. In my adventures, I lean towards light-hearted fantasy fun with lots of camp and cheese, with the occasional moment of seriousness to keep things fresh. I also shine when it comes to creating NPCs of every kind. I'm all about giving player characters opportunities to roleplay and get into what makes them tick. If we're in a campaign and you give your character any backstory, I am taking the first opportunity to have it come up in the story, with your permission. I'm also big on following the narrative and using both my players' inputs and the dice to determine how the story unfolds rather than following something prewritten. Not that I don't prep sessions, but I only know how the session begins. We're going to find out how it ends together. Regarding combat, I follow three principles: 1. Everything gets rolled out in the open. No fudged dice, no adjusted stat blocks, and anything that can genuinely kill you is labeled as such. 2. My monsters think for themselves. I take time to ensure my monsters aren't acting like game pieces in a strategy game but more like real creatures with objectives and feelings. At the same time, I give them tactics that suit their species. 3. Something cool is either happening or about to happen. I design my battlefields with interactable environments that provide all kinds of unique options during combat. And I always give my monsters a unique ability that keeps things from turning into a punching match. I'm also a big fan of in-game romance plots and interpersonal drama (also in-game).
