TPK stands for “Total Party Kill,” a situation in which the entire party, or every player character, dies during a game session. While it’s frequently seen as the end of a campaign, it doesn’t have to be! Game Masters have been known to allow new adventurers to take up the cause of the fallen, or even give dead heroes a chance to cheat death.

Proficiency refers to a few related things in Dungeons & Dragons. First, it can refer to things your character is trained to use; your character might have “proficiency” with certain weapons, types of armor, tools, and languages, meaning they can skillfully apply those things for their respective uses. It also refers to the skills your character specializes in. A wizard might have proficiency in Arcana, for example, to represent years of study; a fighter in Intimidation if they’re big and scary; and a rogue in Stealth if they’re skilled at sneaking around. Finally, it refers to your “proficiency bonus,” which is a flat number you add to your d20 rolls when you’re making a check you’re proficient in. For example, that sneaky rogue adds their proficiency bonus when they roll to hide from guards because they’re proficient in Stealth; to roll to pick a lock because they’re proficient with thieves’ tools; and to stab their target in the back because they’re proficient with daggers. A character’s proficiency bonus increases as they level up.

“Homebrew” is a term from the hobby culture of D&D and tabletop RPGs that means “not officially published.” Anything that a Game Master and their players make up, or even anything official that they modify, is considered “homebrew.” It’s believed to be the most common way to play RPGs, as virtually every table creates custom content and house rules to suit their needs.

“Min-maxing” is a term that refers to mechanically optimizing a tabletop RPG character to specialize in doing one specific thing, to the detriment of their other skills and abilities. It comes from systems where you could maximize a value in one attribute by minimizing the rest. Hyper-specializing in this way is often frowned upon when one character outshines the rest, but players can absolutely min-max productively and cooperatively with others. In fact, some players play RPGs for the purpose of crafting powerful builds that accomplish some goal to great effect. After all, a team of specialists whose strengths and weaknesses all complement each other’s can be extremely fun to play!

A critical hit occurs when a player rolls a “natural 20,” or a 20 on the die, on an attack roll in Dungeons & Dragons. Representing an especially accurate or devastating blow, a character scoring a critical hit doubles the dice they roll for damage. If a rogue would roll 1d6 weapon damage plus 3d6 sneak attack damage, for example, they’ll roll 2d6 for the weapon and 6d6 sneak attack damage on a critical hit.

The Alignment system, though it’s changed over the years, is as old as Dungeons & Dragons itself! It’s a system for categorizing a character or monster’s attitude toward both morality and law. On the morality axis, a creature can be good, neutral, or evil, depending on whether it views helping or hurting others as virtuous. On the law axis, a creature can be lawful, neutral, or chaotic, depending whether it believes civilization to be virtuous or not. The combination of these axes gives nine possible alignments, which you may be familiar with from the proliferation of “alignment charts” on the internet as a popular way to discuss characters from across or within pieces of media. Some players believe alignment is something a character should choose and adhere to, while others use it to describe a character’s position based on their actions. Many players don’t use it at all, as some find it a restrictive or inflexible way to define a character’s philosophy.

A one-shot is a self-contained, single-session game of Dungeons & Dragons (or any roleplaying game). While D&D is commonly considered a “campaign game,” that is, a longer running series of sessions that may last weeks, months, or years, it’s very popular to play just a single session focusing on a specific scenario or element of the world. Some players use one-shots to do wacky or experimental things with characters and settings, as they tend to be lower-commitment and lower-stakes, offering the opportunity to let your creativity run wild.

What is the maximum level you can have in a class in D&D 5e?

The original Dungeons & Dragons was first released in 1974, and it’s come a long way since then! The most recent edition, 5E, came out in 2014 and was updated in 2024.

Dungeons & Dragons was first created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Gygax created the game after he attended one of Arneson’s sessions of a game called Blackmoor, based on Gygax’s rules for a wargame called Chainmail. It’s had several iterations and editions since then, but since 1997, the designer and publisher of D&D has been Wizards of the Coast.

Playing Dungeons & Dragons online has never been easier! All you need is a platform for voice and/or video chat and you can play just as if you were sitting around a table. Some players like to add a virtual tabletop like Roll20 or Foundry to the experience to have a visual aid for maps, tokens, and handouts. They may even have digital dice rollers, character sheets, and music! Of course, one player will need to take on the role of the Dungeon Master. If you don’t already have a group to play with, you can often find one in “Looking For Group” or LFG forums, fan communities for the game, or services like StartPlaying.Games dedicated to helping players find the right group for them.

Dungeons & Dragons can be played with as few as two players: one Dungeon Master, and one player character. Typically, a D&D party consists of one Dungeon Master and 3–5 players, though groups can and do get much bigger than that! The system starts to strain around 7 players, and a big group certainly isn’t recommended for beginners, but some tables swear by it anyway!

How many people do you need to play D&D? / How many people can play D&D?

The traditional Dungeons & Dragons dice set contains seven dice: a 20-sided die, or d20, as well as a d12, d10, d8, d6, d4, and a second d10 sometimes called a d100, which goes from 00 to 90 and is used for rolling “percentiles” from 1–100 when combined with a normal d10. A single set of dice is usually sufficient, but many D&D players quickly find themselves collecting as many as they can get their hands on!

There are three core Dungeons & Dragons books, namely the Player’s Handbook, the Dungeon Master’s Guide, and the Monster Manual. A typical player usually only needs the first, but a prospective Dungeon Master will usually want all three. In addition, Wizards of the Coast has released dozens of supplemental books containing additional optional rules, player options, and adventures, and third-party publishers have produced hundreds more.

To play Dungeons & Dragons, you’ll need a character sheet, dice, and a group of friends! All of these can be physically or virtually present, and at least one of you should understand the basic rules. Usually, that’s the Dungeon Master, the player who prepares the scenario, presents it to the players, and facilitates the game. This player can help the rest learn as they play, creating characters and letting the fantastical adventure unfold!

A single typical session of Dungeons & Dragons lasts around 3–4 hours, though different tables may play for shorter or longer amounts of time. That said, many games last far more than a single session, meeting regularly (or irregularly) for weeks, months, years, or even decades. A single-session game or “one-shot” isn’t uncommon by any means, however, and a dedicated group of players could absolutely complete a small D&D campaign in 6–12 sessions.

The core mechanic of Dungeons and Dragons is rolling a 20-sided die, adding bonuses and modifiers from your character’s abilities, and trying to beat a target number. Players build their characters by choosing a fantastical species, class, abilities, skills, equipment, and magic spells, then embark on adventures to advance their wealth and power. The standard for a reason. I think the beauty of 5e is how customizable it is to fit a variety of scenarios and themes. That said, no system is perfect, and there are downfalls to something this complex. While 99% of what I run is 5e, there are certainly times when a more simplified/open system allows for more creative bending of the rules. 

5e in particular really did a great job of rewarding roleplay, and made things less "crunchy" to appeal to a wider audience. I stand by it when I say that there is a D&D game for everyone, and if you don't think you'd like D&D 5e, then you just haven't found the game / genre for you yet.

Dungeons and Dragons has been my main go to for tabletop since I first picked up the 3.5 players guide my friend brought in to lunch when I was in Highschool. I was hooked! 

Since then I have played many other systems but I find myself time and again coming back to DND because it has a truly robust set of rules and content from which to derive hours of play. 


5th Edition was a game changer for a lot of people, myself included. It truly opened up the game to be more accessible to a wider audience of people. 

While making the game easier to pick up and understand required losing some of the complexity from previous systems like 3.5 I feel that the lost complexity is worth the greater breadth of players and experiences 5E offers. It truly is a step up from the previous changes of 4E, which was fun but never truly captured my attention like 3.5 or 5e. 

I truly recommend 5E to anyone who is looking to get into playing tabletops or wants to come back from a long break. It is truly a fun system and my players always keep me guessing with the breadth of characters they create.

Definitely my go to for Dungeons and Dragons and by far the most requested system of players. I love how 5e has a nice balance of simplicity from start and add just the right amount of crunch as players and dungeonmasters pursue their adventuring career.

5th edition Dungeons and Dragons is undoubtedly popular, with streamlined mechanics (particularly compared to earlier D&D editions), wide variety in classes and subclasses, as well as items. It is best used for a medieval fantasy setting, though that still gives GMs a lot of room to run modules in worlds ranging from Greek myth-inspired epics (Theros) to magic schools (Strixhaven) to classic fantasy adventure (Lost Mine of Phandelver).

As a system, it has some rough edges, particularly in areas where GMs need to do heavy lifting creating their own systems and mechanics. Many of its spells could use some rewrites to be more concise, though 2024's new spell descriptions do some work there over the 2014 version. Combat takes a long time in person because with each attack roll come multiple die rolls (to hit, and then the damage) that can be further modified with various feats, spells, and so on. D&D 5th edition combat is overall best suited for an online environment where die-rolling can be automated to some degree.

I started playing with 3rd Edition and Pathfinder, so when I switched to 5e, I was pleasantly surprised by how much smoother it was. The game streamlines a lot of the complexity without losing the core elements that make D&D fun—combat is faster, character creation is flexible, and the system is easy for new players to jump into. I appreciate how 5e focuses more on storytelling and less on crunch, which makes running games much quicker and less stressful. That said, the lack of deep tactical options can feel limiting if you’re used to systems like Pathfinder, and some might miss the more granular character-building options from older editions. Still, for me, 5e strikes a great balance between simplicity and depth, making it the system I prefer to run games in these days.

What can I say about 5e that hasn't already been said? The best part about the system is the marketing, and it's ability to draw new players in. It's clunky, overly complex at time, and wildly unbalanced. First party adventures are poorly written and require an insane amount of editing and homebrew to balance. My biggest complaint though, is that 5e is marketed as "easy to learn" when it really isn't. If I were to recommend a high fantasy TTRPG, 5e would be very low on my list.

DnD 5e set a new standard for ease of use, layout, GM-friendly design and player approachability when it came out, and it shows in it's popularity. DnD 5e set a new standard in the TTRPG space, forcing other systems to try harder and it deserves much of the praise it gets. By no means perfect, I think few systems manage to give the same sense of comprehensive rules while not bogging the game down with complication as DnD 5e does.
In saying that, I do believe over the past few years there has been a trend in a bad direction. From subclasses that has not been balanced to modules and expansion books with less content or just necessary rules missing, I cannot say it is still at the same standard that it was even 5 years ago, but if people want to play with magic, weapons and want to do it without spending hours learning rules, there are few better systems than DnD 5e.

As a Game Master with over 30 years of experience, I was excited to dive into the 2024 version of Dungeons & Dragons, and I must say, it has exceeded all my expectations. I also appreciate the emphasis on collaborative storytelling. The mechanics that support shared world-building and highlight player agency encourage everyone at the table to contribute to the story, fostering a sense of teamwork that I think is crucial in any RPG. My players have never felt more involved in the creation of the world around them, and watching their excitement grow as they invest in their characters and the plot is a joy to behold.

In terms of art and presentation, the visual aspects of the 2024 version are stunning. The artwork vibrantly brings the worlds to life, inspiring players and GMs alike. The quality of the rulebooks enhances the overall experience, making it not just a game but a beautiful artifact that we enjoy referencing.

Overall, the 2024 version of Dungeons & Dragons has reignited my passion for tabletop gaming. It balances nostalgia with innovation, ensuring that it appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers. I can't recommend it enough to anyone looking to embark on epic adventures with friends. Ah, dear and sweet Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition, aka DnD Next, aka D&D 2014, aka D&D 5e.

When this came out the culture was right in the middle of Game of Thrones fever, the MCU was just getting started, and we were just finishing up franchises like Underworld and the Hobbit. Critical Role, Stranger Things, and D&D's rise in popularity was just around the corner!

I loved running D&D 5e, and the more I learned about the core system the more I enjoyed it. The key, for me, was limiting the Player tools to strictly the contents of the Core Rulebook so that they would discover that pretty much *everything* in D&D 5e revolves around utilizing the Spells, especially in higher level play.

Alas, just like editions before it (except 4e, which was murdered by snobbery) 5e is dying a slow death by bloat and "what-do-you-mean?-WotC-said-buy-books-and-D&DBeyond-so-i-get-to-play-whatever" type of mentality. 

While D&D 2024/5.5/whatever they want to call it makes a valiant attempt at correcting the ship, the brand-based greed of "jk, just include everything you want from 2014" destroyed all of that goodwill of a reset.

I run it because people know it, its popular, and it does a lot of things well in an RPG (until it doesnt...). 

But personally, all things being equal, I'd rather play Pathfinder.

2 Stars seem harsh for the biggest game out there, but here me out. Its not all bad, but there's a lot that gets left out of the conversation. Its 2 stars for how its used, not what it is. Used as a medium-long term combat heavy game its 4-5 stars depending on DM and group. I'm delighted that your DM has wonderful character voices, thrilling intrigue, and NPCs that tug the emotions of the players. But that's the DM doing a good job, not the system. 

Pros/What this is built for
- Indepth tactical combat
- Characters where you can feel the growth from struggling adventurer to a hero capable of confidently punching the god of death right in the mouth
- Good for medium length campaigns, one of the best for long (30+sessions) campaigns

Cons/What it's not built for
- Campaigns that don't emphasize combat. Critical role has trained actors and enough behind the scenes stuff going on that it can tricky you into thinking it HAS to be a roleplay heavy game. Unfortunately when most of the class abilities are only applicable in combat you miss out on that if your characters prefer diplomacy.
- A hack/homebrew that sounds like a great setting or theme but the DM will "just add a few things to make the it work". 5e isn't the most rule heavy/crunchy game out there, but its not rules lite by any means and a lot of the non WotC content add so much to make it fit 5e that it might as well be a new system entirely. 
- Unless everyone is really familiar with the system (and shows up with premade characters) one shots are either too long or unsatisfying; likely both. 
- Its so number heavy that if its the first game someone new to TTRPGs play it might scare them away entirely. The character sheet is so dense with information it can glaze eyes over with analysis paralysis.
- It takes a LONG time to feel like you actually know the rules. Hopefully you don't have a rules lawyer at the table too)

Neutral
- Easy to homebrew if you know the structure, but also very easy to break if you don't (or do and you just want to powergame) 
- Probably the first one that most people think of, unfortunately a shorthand for TTRPGs in general.
- Gotta love an excuse to buy a full set of dice

I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 1980, and throughout the decades, I've seen the game evolve into something truly special. D&D 5th Edition (5e) is, without a doubt, the most accessible and well-balanced version yet, seamlessly blending deep storytelling, engaging mechanics, and limitless creative freedom.  

At its core, 5e captures the true spirit of tabletop roleplaying: player-driven narratives and dynamic, immersive worlds. The streamlined rules allow new players to jump in without feeling overwhelmed while still providing enough depth for seasoned adventurers to sink their teeth into intricate character builds and tactical combat. The beauty of this edition lies in its ability to foster collaboration—whether you're a first-time player or a veteran dungeon delver, the game welcomes all with open arms.  

As a Dungeon Master, I appreciate how 5e prioritizes storytelling and character development over rigid mechanics. It encourages improvisation and roleplaying, allowing players to craft their own paths rather than being railroaded through predefined scripts. The balance of roleplay and combat is flexible, making it easy to tailor each session to the group's preferences. Personally, I lean heavily into storytelling, weaving character backstories into the world, and D&D 5e makes this process seamless with its simple yet powerful mechanics.  

One of my favorite aspects of 5e is its ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment at the table. Whether you're a family looking to embark on a lighthearted adventure, a newcomer eager to explore fantasy realms, or a veteran seeking dark, horror-themed storytelling, this edition provides the tools to craft unforgettable experiences. At my table, discussion and metagaming are not only allowed but encouraged, ensuring that every session is a collaborative effort where players feel heard and engaged.  

Mechanically, the system's balance between simplicity and customization is near-perfect. From the advantage/disadvantage mechanic that keeps the game moving smoothly to the flexible spellcasting system and diverse character options, everything feels intuitive yet rewarding. The house rules I enjoy implementing, such as allowing Champion Fighters to crit on an 18 instead of a 19, only serve to enhance the experience rather than complicate it.  

Ultimately, Dungeons & Dragons 5e is more than just a game—it's a gateway to unforgettable storytelling, camaraderie, and shared adventures. It provides an opportunity for players to step into the shoes of heroes, villains, and everything in between, shaping their own fates in ways only limited by their imagination. My goal as a DM has always been to ensure that players walk away from my games feeling that their time was well spent, and 5e gives me all the tools I need to make that happen.  

If you're looking for a roleplaying system that prioritizes fun, creativity, and accessibility without sacrificing depth, D&D 5e is the gold standard. Whether you're a veteran of the game or picking up your first set of dice, this edition offers an experience worth every moment at the table.

To be honest, I started DM'ing D&D in 1980 and loved it throughout the last 45 years. Granted, some editions were better than others, but 5e has proven to be the most satisfying. To DM, you MUST MUST MUST have the proper attitude. You tell a story, then present situations that challenge your players to make choices. If they are familiar with the game mechanics, their character and the obstacle they face, they should have a 90% chance to resolve it in their favor. I have had a great time doing this with 5e.
With the advent of 5e 2024, the mechanics are better presented and easier to both understand and adjudicate. The wild exploits of 2014 have been reduced and what was used to give players more options have been reciprocated for the things these players now face, in both combatants and obstacles.
I continue to enjoy DM'ing D&D 2024 here in StartPlaying,games and look forward to continuing for a number of years yet. 
Oh, while it may not be as popular, I have used Fantasy Grounds as my VTT of choice and have seen no real good reason to use another. Personal preference.
I do not get a lot of interest from players to use FG, but the ones I do get are seldom disappointed.

The system that started it all, it claims to be the best and the simplest for starting. false, DnD has far too much in it's engine and much of it is just junk or clutter. For brand new TTRPG players it is overwhelming and will lead to burn out. DnD does okay for semi-tactical combat, but it does nothing particularly great. just look at the number of people seeking to speed up or streamline combat to understand how much of a slog combat in DnD can be. if you are seeking to play a TTRPG for the very first time, honestly avoid DnD. better systems are out their for a first time player, Cairn, Knave, Nimble 2e, Shadowdark all spring to mind as simple systems that teach players the concept of a TTRPG.

If you want something that runs specific genres, sure you can homebrew DnD till it's unrecognizable or you can play other systems. 

in short - DnD is well known and marketed sure, but it's clunky, not user friendly, (especially for brand new or player with lives too busy to sit down and learn the classes) its combat is slow and dull, (to the point the vast majority of the community are trying to homebrew the system to be simpler) and it tries so hard to be the 'go to' ttrpg system and claims to be perfect for any genre that it becomes awful for all genres compared to others.

The ratio of its Pillars of Game (Combat, Roleplay, and Exploration) is very dependent on your DM, so you need to talk with them before you begin to make sure you will have the game you want and enjoy!

Good ol' D&D - A game with vast amounts of player resources to ensure each and everyone at the table gets to play whatever their heart desires. In my experience, D&D's claims to have three main pillars of gameplay - combat, exploration, and social interaction - can be true, but their ratio is very much dependent on your DM, since a vast majority of its rules are dedicated to combat, which in no way means one has to play it as a pure combat simulator, though it may tempt many a DM into a more combat-heavy play style. Overall, as a player, I think this is a very cool system to play, but if you are more into rules-light or narrative-driven systems, D&D might not be the best fit.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e is by far the easiest of the most well-known systems to get into, providing a reliable and enjoyable game experience. The community support is phenomenal, especially on platforms like YouTube, where countless tutorials and guides are available to help new and seasoned players alike. There are numerous ways to learn and making characters is simple and quick using DNDBeyond, Roll20, and a handful of other character builders. It's an accessible and engaging system for everyone.

Dungeons and Dragons will always be a classic, no matter the edition. Having only ever experienced the game in 5th edition, I can't compare it to older gens, but I do absolutely love it. The available online tools for it are unmatched, the agency given to DMs invaluable, and the detailed lore and mechanics beloved by players. Support for homebrew and third party content is just the icing on the top. It's not a perfect system by any means, but nothing ever could be. 
The only thing holding me back from a full 5-star rating is solely how WotC and Hasbro have handled the property in the recent years, but the continued support for 3rd party content alongside official content is a shining light for the future of D&D.

The original dnd5e system was designed to be able to learn quickly and dive into a game. Tools like Dndbeyond have made it much easier to navigate rules and character creation, and many of the virtual table tops have even more support for the system. When it comes to popularity, few systems will compare to Dnd. The new update to the 2024 ruleset brings with it some extra complexity, but the designers truly had the players in mind when they introduced updates for spells, new abilities for martial characters, and plenty of new character options to enjoy.

The prewritten campaigns do a good job of telling a story, but they also leave plenty of room to fine tune and adjust the story to a particular group at the same time. Many of the modules end up with countless resources to enhance player experience. 

For dungeon masters having so many resources can be both a gift and a curse. While it is useful and exciting to be able to look up new ideas and utilize 3rd party resources for inspiration or addition to your game, very quickly keeping track of how everything works can get overwhelming. At the same time, the 3rd party settings and campaigns that have come out in the last decade add a new playstyle that can fit any group’s desire. 

I would suggest DnD Fifth Edition if you are looking for something with a large fan base and that offers support to run a variety of game styles in a variety of settings.

I have been running D&D 5e for as long as I have been a game master, and I still almost exclusively run this system. While I am branching out, I highly recommend 5e for its robust ruleset that still allows for a high degree of flexibility and improvisation. I also hold the community in high regard, and in my experience, D&D players are committed to maintaining a welcoming and cooperative atmosphere for players of all experiences. Lastly, due to the popularity of D&D, there is no shortage of support for the system in terms of homebrew content, VTTs, and third-party tools.

Review is for the 2024 rules and having been DMing games since its release and DM’d 2014 for many years in IRL groups. I’ve found the new rulebooks to be clearer and more informative than the previous version. All of the players have been having a blast with with new class features and working out great ways to power build their character. 

There are so many great adventure from Wizards of the Coast and some of the newer ones are bring back a few older adventures, I remember form AD&D days. Having given them a modern feel and to fit the newer rules. 

Overall I feel it is a great TTRPG, that gives the players a lot of options. It is more a combat game that role-play, but that’s no reason for RP to be ignored either. He two go hand in hand in D&D and make those really memorable games.

The challenges within the system (necessity for math, steep learning curve, accessibility of materials, continued need for growth in diversity) are present and manageable with the right table and appropriate communication. There is a large enough community of players to provide access to the style of game play one may be seeking, which gives this particular system a definite boost.

I lke to say that 5e is a system with a good skeleton but the meat isn't the best. What I mean by that is that the base system and mechanics themselves are fairly simple, straightforward, and good. I feel where it fails to shine is with the content that has been released. Monsters in particular are fairly bland.

It's a system which is a strange mix of having lots of rules yet at the same time having lots of spaces that don't have rules. 

So far however I have been fairly pleased with the 2024. It has brought in some exciting new features for players and gave them a power boost as well.

Dungeons and Dragons found me in middle school and never let go. There is a special magic in the collaborative storytelling experience that’s made possible by its ruleset, community, and lore. That of course, can speak to any TTRPG - but there is just something about D&D that’s persistent for me.

DnD first peaked my interest in 2012-2013 where I had the chance to enter the world of mystery and adventure. Through pain, sacrifice, service, and duty to the realm, I was able to play a celestial Deva, an angelic creature that wracked the world's enemies with electrical magic and healed my allies with a soft touch or calming word. I played a tempest cleric, and I enjoyed every second of the combat, gritty world that my party and I were a part of. 

Flash forward 10 years, and I have been blessed with an opportunity to re-step back into the DnD world and learn, learn, and learn some more. This time I was learning as a player who had a future desire to GM.

D&D 5e has been the staple for me for years. The system is not perfect by any means, it has a lot of flaws, but its community and 3rd party content are fixing a lot of issues, when the designers do not. Even though it's marketed as suitable for many play styles, it is not really. Heroic fantasy is its prime category where it shines the most. The further you go from that, the more things you discover that don't fit very well and that you have to homebrew a lot to make it work. It is fairly rules-heavy, but not at an extreme amount.
I would have given it 5 stars if the designing studio had a different company above their heads, as most of its problem derive from decisions outside the design compartment.

I love Dungeons & Dragons, love my players and love the game - so much that it's my full-time profession and passion. I run D&D 5e games using the original rules or the new 2024 rules. And while I've run other game systems, I always come back to D&D. If you're new to D&D, find a Dungeon Master (DM) who's good at working with new players.  If you're an experienced D&D player who is looking to learn the 5e or 5e 2024 rules, look for someone who has experience teaching others. What's great about D&D is you can learn as you play!

D&D 5e is the first game I ever ran, and I've been running at least one campaign using the system at all times since 2015. It's an amazing update to the legacy of D&D, and comparing it to previous editions, it is my favorite by far! That said, if you're new to it, know that it is only the best system in one way: name recognition. If you're looking for a well-balanced tactical monster fighting game, Pathfinder 2e does that better. If you want quick, nimble storytelling, Dungeon World is better.

While D&D 5e is still the grandaddy of all RPG's, the quality of the content published by Wizards of the Coast has been sub-par the last few years. There are some great home-brewed games and worlds out there, which in my opinion is what keeps the game vibrant and relevant. Hopefully WotC gets back to its roots of providing good, quality material for its core fans. As it stands currently, it requires heavily home-brewed rules to even make the game approach the balance needed to allow for the challenging/rewarding experience that players want. I.e. it takes a LOT of work to make things work in the game. I tend to stick to updating old modules to current rules, which has made for some fun adventures. While I still have some love for the system, mostly due to its trailblazing for RPGs in general, it has lost its way, in my opinion.

What can I say about D&D 5e? It took everything good from previous editions and combined them into the best edition of the RPG. The new 2024 rules made the necessary changes to transform into an even better edition. It's the easiest RPG to jump into as a new player and the easiest for a DM to go even rules-free if they want to. Some of my best memories go hand in hand with the greatest RPG the world has ever met. I totally recommend it for new and veteran RPG players and wannabe DMs.

D&D 5e has so much content and it does not really play well together. It also seems to be about uber powerful builds and grinding combat versus fast and deadly action with deeper role play. It had a lot of marketing boost behind it, but it is not the best game out there unless you want a very specific type of game. Also WotC are don't deserve any more had earned nerd money. Support small press and indy game creators over corporate BBEGs

I love DnD! It gives GMs room to create the style of game that suits them, whether you want a combat heavy game, a tactical game, a roleplaying game or even a mix of everything! I've been playing it for a very long time now and don't see that changing anytime soon. The rules are detailed enough to have a solid base to create your game with while still giving plenty of room to create your own mechanics or improvise.

Ten years in, still a classic. RPGs generally cover the space between three pillars: Combat, Social Interaction, and Exploration and the granddaddy of them all makes it look easy. 5e (both 2014 and 2024 editions) makes it easy to get going quickly to strap on a sword, practice your dad jokes and pickup lines, and choke down a ration or two. Whether you're playing through updated classic modules or seek out new spaces where no hero has gone before, DnD will get you there. High fantasy with a low barrier to entry makes it hard to say no.

Five Stars for D&D 5e. Regardless of what edition folks have played before, or if they've never played at all, everyone is able to sit down at the table and jump into an adventure right away with 5th edition, myself included. You can navigate the game on a basic level or customize your heart out as you become more invested in character building. Whatever your experience level, D&D is still a solid option when looking for enjoyment at the gaming table.

Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) is the TTRPGs (Table Top Role Playing Game) that truly started it all 50 years ago (released in 1974). This system has been through many changes over the years but I find 5E (5th edition) to be my favorite. 

DnD 5E is simple enough to learn as you play while also having enough content to keep you learning for a long time. Also the rules are designed in a way that gives me as a DM lots of opportunities to change and modify the way we play without breaking the game.

All in all DnD 5E is a wonderful place to start your TTRPG journey.

Dungeons & Dragons claims to be "The world's best roleplaying game", but I would personally amend that claim to "The world's best-known roleplaying game".  It is usually the one people know if they have heard of the hobby at all.  It does its genre very well.  I have been playing and running D&D for over two decades, and wouldn't have continued coming back to it if it didn't do that so well.

Of the Dungeons & Dragons editions I have played (including extensive play in 3.5 and 5th Edition as well as a *very* brief dip into 2nd Edition), 5e does the job in the most accessible way I have come across.  I always feel that the mark of a good game system is one that a person brand-new to roleplaying games can pick up and learn with relative ease, but that a veteran player can still sit down and enjoy.  Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition achieves this in my view.  While it doesn't do everything well, a good Dungeon Master can make things work in most cases.

The industry standard, this game is the most popular, but not the best I've played. An excellent introduction to the hobby, I personally feel sad about the fact that many player's TTRPG hobby begins and ends with this game, when so many other systems have so much more to say. Too many people bend over backwards trying to make this system do some things poorly that other systems do smoothly- homebrew is not always the answer.

D&D 5e is by far the most recognizable TTRPG in the space. It’s designed to be fun and relatively easy to pick up, making it a great starting point. While there are plenty of systems with a more specific focus, D&D 5e gives you a solid 101 in most aspects of tabletop roleplaying. The base game offers a ton of options for both new and experienced players, as well as for GMs. On top of that, the community has poured so much love into this game—there’s an overwhelming amount of content from third-party publishers you can add. If you need something for your game, chances are it already exists.

As a GM, especially if you’re running a narrative-focused game, there’s no shortage of third-party rules and options that have been tested and refined to work seamlessly with the base system. So dive in, learn the rules (or tweak them to fit your style), and explore the ever-growing community that’s building something amazing together. When you’re ready, take what works for you, change what doesn’t, and craft a game that’s just right for your table.

This is the easiest system to play for new players. IT has the most support and the most players and is less crunchy than other systems and is seen as kinda the default now days. 

The only down side is that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and their parent company Hasbro are losing money so they are trying everything to squeeze more out of this system so right now there are 2 rulesets for it and many opinions on various changes. Also WotC is prone to try weird things that may effect the system in the future so it looses a star based on WotC's crazy behavior.

I like it because of the range of resources for both DMs and players. Most of my games will probably be this system.
