About the adventure

In the city of Waterdeep rests a tavern called the Yawning Portal, named after the gaping pit in its common room. At the bottom of this crumbling shaft is a labyrinthine dungeon shunned by all but the most daring adventurers. Known as Undermountain, this dungeon is the domain of the mad wizard Halaster Blackcloak. Long has the Mad Mage dwelt in these forlorn depths, seeding his lair with monsters, traps, and mysteries—to what end is a constant source of speculation and concern. This adventure picks up where Waterdeep: Dragon Heist leaves off, taking characters of 5th level or higher all the way to 20th level should they explore the entirety of Halaster’s home. Twenty-three levels of Undermountain are detailed herein, along with the subterranean refuge of Skullport. Treasures and secrets abound, but tread with care!

How to prepare

Players will need to have/create a free Roll20 account and join the game (a direct link inviting you to the game will be provided) AS WELL AS a free account on Discord so we can easily communicate via text, voice, and/or video. Roll20 has audio and video capability but it is oftentimes glitchy and I do not want to risk interruptions to your game. Customization/creation of characters can be done once the invitation is accepted, preferably prior to your scheduled session and with DM approval/assistance.

What I provide

Katie will provide the adventure (including the story, maps, voice acting and role play), an in-game tutorial of Roll20 (if needed), and will help players navigate the rules of D&D 5th Edition featuring content from "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage."

Gameplay details

Players will need an account (free or paid, but free is sufficient) on: -Roll20.net for maps, -DnDBeyond.com with a D&D 5e character built to specifications below, -the Beyond20 extension so the character sheet will communicate with Roll20, -Zoom with video/audio capabilities, and -Discord, to communicate with the other players and the GMs before and after the session. Basic knowledge of D&D 5e and your character's abilities and features is highly recommended for optimized play time. Katie's table strives to be inclusive of all types of players and everyone is expected to keep their "Plays Well With Others" badge on at all times. ;-) The number one goal is to have fun creating and interacting with a fantastical collaborative story! Lines and veils can be submitted prior to and during play time. (for reference: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/30906/what-do-the-terms-lines-and-veils-mean)

How will character creation work

Characters should start at LEVEL 5. Upon acceptance, you will receive an invitation to your private game, and will have access to various resources within my compendium upon booking your session(s). You can make your own character using the 5th Edition Player's Handbook (sorry, no Minotaurs and Hobgoblins in this one) or you can choose from a variety of pre-made characters which you will be able to customize as you level up. If you wish to create your own, we should get them established before the first session (unless you would like a "session zero" to learn how to build characters), and Katie is happy to assist if necessary. We will start at level 5, so I recommend using the charactermancer in Roll20 to build your character. The charactermancer will also make sure that you stay within the rules of character building, so it's a great tool for new players to explore. DnDBeyond is also available as long as the player has the Beyond20 extension which will link to our virtual table top (roll20.net) so the gm can see your rolls and assist with any questions you may have about your character.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: High
  • Roleplay: Medium
  • Puzzles: Medium
  • Experience Level: Open to all
