Waterdeep: Dragon Heist & Dungeon of the Mad Mage
Dungeons & Dragons 5e on Discord, Roll20
About the adventure
“Famed explorer, Volothamp Geddarm, needs you to complete a simple quest. Thus begins a mad romp through the wards of Waterdeep as you uncover a villainous plot involving some of the city’s most influential figures.” “In the city of Waterdeep rests a tavern called the Yawning Portal, named after the gaping pit in its common room. At the bottom of this crumbling shaft is a labyrinthine dungeon shunned by all but the most daring adventurers.” That’s right, folks! It’s an action packed two-part adventure into Waterdeep! This long-term campaign will start with the Dragon Heist campaign and then, using the same characters, dive into the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. We’ll be taking characters from level 1 - 20, running both books back to back.
How to prepare
Players will need a webcam and mic. You will also need a discord account so we can communicate effectively. Since we are using Roll20 for encounters, no additional software is necessary. Please have your own dice as I won’t always rely on Roll20 for dice rolling, however, I do expect honesty from my players. I will be asking for some key information from the players about their characters like HP, AC, languages, etc. I am not necessarily interested in knowing every detail about a player’s abilities. That being said, I am also happy to work with you to help you understand your abilities and how they can apply in various situations. In addition, players should look for an image to represent their character that I can use for the VTT.
What I provide
I have the books necessary to run the game and will be providing a vast amount of in-world knowledge and lore. Furthermore, I have maps for players to view in and out of combat.
In Session Zero we will be discussing the various themes of the game and determining what the players are comfortable with and not comfortable with. Some themes are ingrained in the campaign book and need to be discussed so I have adequate time to rewrite those ideas. I have a very low tolerance for disrespect and take the DM/Player contract very seriously. Also, I am very open to discussing things before and after a game.

How will character creation work
Since the plan is for this campaign to span two books, we’ll be starting at level 1, creating our characters during session zero. Given that this is set up to be a long-term adventure, there will be options during the game for the players to make adjustments to their characters (within reason) before settling into the choices that they’ve made. My goal is to intertwine your characters into the story, so backstories with several NPC character names specific to you would be preferred. We can, of course, discuss how to do this most effectively during session zero.
Players can expect
