About the adventure

Planks and line winches groan as a crisp wind carries the ship, and all who travel aboard, South-by-Southwest on a course set for a place you've often heard called the End of the Earth. You weren't expecting so many passengers aboard this trading frigate bound from Baldur's Gate to Port Nyanzaru, the only safe portage for the tropical wilderness of rain forest, plateaus, impassable mountains, and belching volcanoes known as Chult. Not just sailors are aboard, but folk with specialized carrying crates, strange pets, and hunger in their eyes. Explorers, mages, cut throats, and even some withered aristocrat hiding her face behind a bejeweled veil, have all appeared at one time or another in the mess. Everyone aboard, including you, must surely have a compelling reason for traveling to perhaps the most dangerous place in the known world. A place where flesh-eating lizards thunder through razorvine, hordes of undead menace all the continent's settlements (few that there are), and where once dwelt a people so wretched and accursed, it is said, that the gods of the land tried to offer their cities to Asmodeus to punish their wickedness and the Hells spat them back. One would certainly need a reason to go to the end of the earth. That, or simply be mad. Tomb of Annihilation has it all: fantastic characters and places, dungeons packed with deadly monsters and fascinating treasures, opportunities for any mode of play... this adventure is a true classic. I have also added twists, turns, and an optional Lovecraftian overhaul to keep things interesting for those already familiar with the module as-written. This game is beginner-friendly, though designed to be challenging, and should take us from levels 1-15

How to prepare

Essentials: headphones, microphone, Discord, an account on D&D Beyond, a basic understanding of the rules of D&D 5e (I'm happy to provide some material and coaching to help new players) , a personal computer (Foundry does not work on tablets, phones, and struggles with the Safari browser) and some time spent thinking of your character's place in this story. We will also meet one-on-one for an interview/zero session where I will provide a brief survey that will help us establish common expectations for this campaign. Preferred but not essential: webcam, and sharable link to heroforge rendition of your character.

What I provide

D&D Beyond content, a link to the Foundry server, and [checks the size of the D&D folder] approaching a terabyte of maps, music and sound, spreadsheets, artwork, and supplemental PDFs xD

Gameplay details

At the start of the game, and also at periodic check-ins, I like to figure out how interested the group is in adding Lovecraftian Horror to this adventure. This can substantially change the 'mouth feel' of the campaign but for fans of the Cosmic Horror genre this module provides an excellent opportunity to explore those themes.

How will character creation work

We'll use D&D Beyond (with all content enabled from me, so you won't have to purchase anything) to make characters together, which I'll then import into Foundry VTT. I'm a big fan of working with players to help fit their character into the world, the story, and the rest of the party, but I won't push too hard if you just want to jump in without an elaborate backstory.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: High
  • Roleplay: Medium
