About the adventure

Nestled at the feet of the Karkos Mountains, the tiny village of Walsfeld sits near the headwaters of the Annúnsir, what the humans of Westmark call the Star River. Wheat and sheep farming dominate the local economy, and people pay much more attention to the weather and wool prices than rumors of distant wars or disasters. It’s been a long time since the people of Walsfeld have worried about anything more frightening than sheep ticks or a late frost, but a now a pack of strangely determined wolves is driving farmers from their fields and spiriting away entire flocks in the middle of the night. With food supplies running low and their sorcerer-in-residence nowhere to be found, the village council sends out a desperate plea for brave adventurers to destroy the beasts for good. This is an adaptation of The Wolves of Welton, ported into a homebrewed setting with original content mixed throughout. This is a new-player friendly one-shot and is intended to give players an opportunity to learn the basics and try out game style before jumping into a campaign. Veteran players are welcome to join, but are asked to remember that this is primarily a teaching game and to embrace being good ambassadors of the hobby to new players. Since this game is targeted for players of All Ages, please keep the content G to PG-rated.

How to prepare

Players will need a stable internet connection and a webcam or microphone, and speakers or headphones (some way for everyone else to hear you and some way for you to hear us). You will need an account Discord are needed as well. A free account works just fine. For this free game, we're going to use the Owlbear Rodeo VTT. Dice will be rolled virtually on Owlbear Rodeo, and any rules can be discussed during the session zero and during gameplay. Players should find a picture that they want to represent their character in-game. Players will also be sent a brief web survey on sign-up to help me tailor the game to players' experience, needs and interests.

What I provide

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency... oh, wait, sorry wrong script... I bring a commitment to building a fun, collaborative experience for everyone at the table. I will provide a discord server, a roll20 link, a D&D Beyond campaign page, maps and reference material, customized tokens and the adventure with occasional music and special effects for ambiance. I am also working on creating good digital maps from some elaborate physical terrain builds of key locations to get that beautiful Dwarven Forge terrain into my digital games.

Gameplay details

This game uses the following Safety Tools. Lines and veils are used to set boundaries on content in a game. Lines are hard limits on content, things that the GM or the players don’t want to engage in. Setting up a line means that content won’t show up in the game at all. Veils are soft limits, things that are ok “behind a curtain” or when they “cut-to-black.” Setting up a veil means that the content might be in the game but not spotlighted or described in great detail. Lines and veils can be adjusted as needed throughout the game. For example, in this game, any sexual content or torture is Veiled -- if it happens, the game will "fade to black" and move on to the next scene. Similarly, this game will utilize the X-card tool -- If anything makes anyone uncomfortable in any way, simply say or type "X Card" in the chat. You don’t have to explain why. It doesn't matter why. When we use the X-Card card, we simply edit out anything X-Carded. And if there is ever an issue, anyone can call for a break and we can talk privately.
