The Quiet Year: A Post Apocalyptic Map Game

... on Roll20, Discord

About the adventure

For a long time, we were at war with The Jackals. Now, finally, we’ve driven them off, and we’re left with this: a year of relative peace. One quiet year, with which to build our community up and learn again how to work together. Come Winter, the Frost Shepherds will arrive and we might not survive the encounter. This is when the game will end. But we don’t know about that yet. What we know is that right now, in this moment, there is an opportunity to build something. -------------------------------------------- The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a community living after the collapse of civilization, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern. The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game. The Quiet Year occupies an interesting space – part roleplaying game, part cartographic poetry.

Brings Maps, maps, maps, video editing skills, cheesecake recipes, books for lesser known systems, and a really awful sense of humor to the table

How to prepare

All you need is a Roll20 account, a Discord account, and some snacks. I'll provide the rules, the art, and somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4 of the good time.

What I provide

The map making set up and the rules. This is a minimalist game with minimalist requirements.

Gameplay details

- The Quiet Year is a map making game. We will be using Roll20 to create impressionistic maps, not disimilar from maps you might see from the 1400's. All the information is there, but precise accuracy isn't important. - The game is very free form, with prompts asking open-ended questions which rely on our imagination and discussion to flesh out. The game uses a deck of cards for random number generation, and it ends when the King of Spades is drawn. - I have a wide variety of artwork available from roll 20 to create the maps, or you can use the drawing tools when its your turn. - NO ARTISTIC SKILLS NEEDED- LORD KNOWS I DON'T HAVE THEM!

How will character creation work

There are no specific player characters in The Quiet Year. You represent factions, groups, and occasional individuals. However, they are only "yours" during your turn- and they don't have any stats for you to worry about. Instead of character creation, we'll go over the rules- a process that takes less than 15 minutes and also works as a bit of an icebreaker.

Players can expect
