About the adventure

Far in the distant north lies an island all but forgotten by the outside world. On this far flung island of snow and ice can be found countless wonders, savage tribes of men who war against one another for resources and honor, the enigmatic Soqona who have been forced to flee their ancestral deeping pools, and the mysterious Maqtuq, great bears that walk like men in their underground ice caves. The Mysteries of Maqtaqrii is an open world Dungeons and Dragons experience. There is no one villain to smite, treasure to find, or dungeon to clear. The only thing that is predetermined is the starting location, a Dwarven colony call Dugk-Khan. These dwarves are newcomers to Maqtaqrii, brought there by the foreversnow found deep within the glaciers that surround the island. This foreversnow is a magical ice that always retains its coldness and never melts. Dugk-Khan will act as a base of sorts for the players, a safe starting location from which they can make excursions onto the mainland. Maqtaqrii is full of things to do, people to meet, enemies to vanquish, factions to garner favor with, and locations to explore. With over 50 described dungeons (of varying size and complexity), hundreds of random encounters, dozens of settlements, and never before utilized stat blocks, the island is home to adventure of every sort an intrepid wanderer could want. I hope to see you soon in the land where summer never dawns. Until then, keep your toes warm.

How to prepare

Skype is required. This will be a theatre of the mind campaign as it would simply be too time consuming to create a battle map for every location in the adventure. Either a proper printout of your character or simply a piece of paper or computer document with all of your character's information will be required. If you do not have dice there are plenty of free apps that you can download for rolls.

What I provide

This is a virtual game. Concept art will be shared for certain things that are not already part of base D&D.

Gameplay details

Because of the open world of element to the this adventure, gameplay will consist of whatever the players seek out. Combat will be present as will opportunities to roleplay and make decisions that impact the island. Because of the cold environment preparation for excursions will be crucial. Are you traversing the arctic wilderness on a dogsled, in a wagon pulled by Aurochs, or will you brave the island on foot? Supplies will need to be managed, including food and fuel for campfires. There will be a general map of Maqtaqrii that the players fill out by discovering locations, and a hidden mechanic for keeping track of how you are viewed by the factions of the island. Keep in mind that if excursions to the island are not properly planned it is possible that the players will be left to the mercy of Maqtaqrii, and she is a cruel mistress.

How will character creation work

Characters will be created before the game. If you do not know the process for creating a character, I am more than willing to help. We will be starting at level 1. Contact me before the first game so I can ok your character. I won't be harsh but I want your fellow players to be as immersed as they would like. This means no sons of demon lords, half angels, or exiled princes, level 1 is a starting point for creating a powerful character.
