The Last Torch - MEGADUNGEON: The Ordeal of Castle Scarghul

The Last Torch

About the adventure

The Ordeal of Castle Scarghul is a infamous competition that attracts the best adventurers from all over the Lands. Fame and riches await those who manage to win the challenge! Or at least... that's what the minstrels say, but the truth is far more sinister: the ordeal is not just an arduous test of courage and skill, but a cruel survival race in which four ambitious patrons make their respective teams of champions fight to the death. The purpose of the ordeal is quite simple: four teams shall battle in the tunnels of a deadly dungeon, trying to survive, snatching loot and resources from the others, making their way to the Banner of Victory. You are Adventurers. Your line of work takes you outside of the safe embrace of city walls, straight into danger, and hopefully into treasure and glory. Death awaits behind every corner, the budget is tight and the enemies are many, but such is the adventuring life. This campaign uses a system called The Last Torch, originally published in Italy, and translated in 2019. It's a very simple system, easy to learn and master, but also very lethal for the characters if unprepared or truly unlucky. It is ideal for people that have never played a Tabletop RPG before, for kids (in a slightly less gritty version) and for experienced players looking for a challenge. This is not your usual heroic high fantasy, this is a gritty story of a group of everyday people taking on the most dangerous job trying to make a living. Will you be able to succeed? Or will you just be another corpse left unburied in the dungeons? Remember to bring your torch. Only Evil can see in Darkness.

How to prepare

Ideally you'd want: >A Discord Account >A Roll20 Account >A PC (or Mac, or Laptop) that can run both >Headphones >A Webcam (absolutely not required to use it if you don't feel like showing your face) >A Microphone (many headphones and webcams come with one) >Stable Internet Connection with unlimited data (WiFi or some nice mobile plan)

What I provide

I'll provide the battlemaps for roll20, as well as some art to get you more immersed in the setting.

Gameplay details

In this short campain (which can also be the start of a longer one) the adventurers will face one of the most dangerous places of the Lands. As a team the will make their way through one of the numerous paths of the castle, exploring as much as possible to find important resources and clues, and fighting numerous battles for their survival. There are chances of interactions with NPCs, especially in the late challenges. The possibility of dying is always present, but there are just as many possibilities to recover new companions to replace the fallen.

How will character creation work

Players can choose whether to create the characters themselves (examining them when starting the first session) or to do it together in a (free) session zero: in this few hours i will introduce you to the core mechanics and we will create the adventuring party. If you're not interested in making a new character from scratch (because you want to get straight into the game or have never done it before), I can make you one or we can use one of the pre-generated Adventurers available in PDF. I'll send you the folder through my Discord.
