About the adventure

Adventurers far and wide travel across Faerun to the City of Splendors, where they can take a seat at the infamous Yawning Portal, have a chat with the proprietor Durnan or listen to Mattrim the Bard's latest gossip filled set, and stare down into the depths of Undermountain; some even venture into the darkness at the fee of 1gp per adventurer. However, you won't be plunging into the depths of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. No, no! You will be the adventurers that Mattrim sings of, that Durnan chuckles about while polishing glasses! You'll become the quest-takers and adventurers that become Tales from the Yawning Portal. This popular module brings 7 various adventures from the history of Dungeons and Dragons into bite-sized, thrilling pieces; each adventure will be broken into 3-5 session long mini-campaigns. Players are encouraged to roleplay, dress-up, but be prepared for captivating combat-- what bard doesn't include a good jump scare in their retellings anyway? Every session will begin with a recap and conversation with barkeep and retired adventurer, Durnan, portrayed by your (hopefully)(new) favorite agenderfluid DM, Urvy Fitz!

How to prepare

Players should have a general idea of their character ready when coming to Session Zero, as well as a general understanding of the rules (which is mostly be cool and respectful to your fellow storytellers and don't get frustrated as we go through the all the steps in combat). When it comes to character sheets, before the first session, I would like a PDF copy of it, but it isn't 100% necessary. The games will be held online via Discord and Roll20. Discord will be used for audio and visual communication; I do prefer players have a working webcam and feel comfortable using it, but again it isn't 100% necessary, just let's talk about it beforehand. Roll20 will be used for maps and tokens, as if it were our table; that being said, images of characters would be nice to have before the first session as well so I can help make tokens! You can use virtual or real dice! A part of D&D to me is trust, so roll how you like, but remember none of us are gods.

What I provide

I will bring the module, I will bring sound effects and music, I will have maps and tokens, and I hope that I will bring the absolute hype that you want at the table!

Gameplay details

To preface: I have a pretty open door policy and want to work with everyone; I am comfortable adapting and evolving to do what need be to make this virtual table a safe space for any and everyone. During Session Zero, I like to discuss the team-- both in character and out of character. It is preferred that you have an idea of a character when you come to the table. There we can talk about what we all are wanting to get out of this game, our motivations for playing. Here is when I like to discuss potentially triggering topics and determine what safety tools players would like to use. When it comes to X/N/O Cards, I like to use emojis in private DMs, just by the way! I always want to prioritize mental and emotional health and well-being and will discuss with players when they need character broken. When it comes to safety and comfort, these discussions can be had at any time, even in the middle of a session.

How will character creation work

When coming to Session Zero, I ask that you at least have a general character idea in my mind, some sorta picture in your brain of what you'd like to play, because altogether as a party we can work together to make that image come alive. Sometimes it's nice to build characters together, because it allows for cohesion discussions! Character level will depend on which adventure from the module is being ran at that point in time, which will be listed during session postings.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Low
  • Roleplay: Medium
  • Puzzles: Low
  • Experience Level: Open to all
