About the adventure

This is the 5e adaptation of a grand saga written for the Greyhawk setting. It consists of the full Scourge of the Slave Lords (Slave Pits of the Undercity, Secret of the Slavers Stockade, Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords, In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords) saga followed by Against the Giants: The Liberation of Geoff, Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, Halls of the Fire Giant King, Descent into the Depths of the Earth, Vault of the Drow, and Queen of the Demonweb Pits. Starting characters should be 5th-7th level and can expect to reach 18+ level by the end of the chronicle. If you've always wanted to play this grand adventure....here's your chance.

Additional Details

How to prepare

Players will need a mic and must be able to run Discord. A dedicated Discord room will be set up for the campaign. Visitors may "sit-in" and observe only if they are silent and the entire party agrees in a private poll. Dice will be rolled digitally using a custom room at www.rolldicewithfriends.com. Character portraits are encouraged, and background writeups are also encouraged as long as they do not exceed 1 page in length (single-spaced with 11-point font). Game files will be placed in a series of folders on Google Drive. The party will have its own folder for treasures, notes, etc. Accurate record-keeping is the party's responsibility. The entire party will also be "summarized" on a one-page quick sheet with a set of stat blocks. Individual character sheets are fine for detailed records, but info on the quick sheet takes precedence and must adhere to the DM's format for quick reference and fast pace. Starting characters should be 5th-7th level.

What I provide

A lot of digital files: pictures, maps, notes, a playlist, all the modules (which I have studied thoroughly beforehand), and so forth. Visuals and maps will be "shared" so players can see them where appropriate. Occasional pieces of music may be used for dramatic effect or to set the tone. Some map fudging may be necessary when dungeon crawling. I don't use sophisticated map services or digital tools because I'm mildly technophobic about these newfangled services. I may assimilate them if time permits.

Gameplay details

Players can expect lots of fast-paced commando-style combat, occasional fudging of the rules for verisimilitude, realistic medieval ambiance (including the unpleasant parts), gritty descriptions of brutal combat, some mild sexuality (when thematically appropriate), themes of slavery/racism/sacrifice, and similar. These themes won't be excessive, but where they are relevant to the plot and for setting realism they will be present. Blatantly evil behavior will not be tolerated at the table. Player preferences will be adhered to if discussed in Session 0 or as part of the Luxton Interview. The first set of four modules is called "Scourge of the Slave Lords" for a reason.

How will character creation work

Character creation happens during session zero. All players must clear their backgrounds prior to joining. Backgrounds will be folded into the storyline as gracefully as possible as long as they do not dominate or alter the trajectory of the chronicle. Characters are built using a 27-point buy. Importing existing characters from other games is fine as long as they adhere to these guidelines. The adventure is meant for 4-5 players. Ideally five.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Medium
  • Roleplay: High
  • Puzzles: Medium
  • Experience Level: Intermediate
