About the adventure

Grand campaigns and years-long story arcs are a staple of the RPG format, and they have their place. Sometimes, though, you want your dice-rolling catharsis to come and go in a single evening, no complications, no frustration, and none of that dreaded SCHEDULING. That's where I come in. Startplaying Games and Roll20 are teaming up this February to present a series of "one-and-done" games; rpgs designed specifically to be enjoyed in a single session, no baggage, no fuss. As part of this scheme I'll be running a whole smorgasboard of paid and free games, from acclimed indie darlings to hidden gems. Check below in the description for information about those. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Ironsworn, the hit indie game by Shawn Tomkin, follows the exploits of wandering adventurers in the grim and dangerous Ironlands. Though the land is perilous, these wanderers have vowed to bring safety, peace and comfort wherever they may roam. They are the Ironsworn, and you have joined their number. Best played by small groups (hence the limited seats), Ironsworn is a game of exploration, hard-fought battles and hard-won hope. With the assistance of a series of prompt tables known as Oracles, players will wander where the road takes them, protecting the innocent, slaying monsters, and bringing a sliver of reprieve to a harsh world. Fans of Vikings, Skyrim, The Last Kingdom and the Witcher will find a lot to love in the brooding Ironlands and their weathered inhabitants. The "Your world" mechanic allows groups to tailor the grit and fantasy quotas of their particular Ironlands to taste, while the oracles ensure that no-one can really predict what happens next. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [Game] not your vibe or at a bad time? Additional Details

How to prepare

You will need a webcam and mic, as well as the Discord app and a Roll20 account on whatever device is most convenient for you. I will also send out an optional "your world" questionnaire in case people want to move quickly past the worldbuilding portion at the top of the session.

What I provide

Most if not all of the game can be handled in the game client, but where relevant I will provide extra materials such as PDFs

Gameplay details

Safety and Inclusivity are two of my highest priorities - I use a digital version of Shaw & Bryant-Monk's ttrpg consent form to generate a custom lines and veils document, and use an enhanced version of the X-Card system in game, which I will go through at the top of the session. This game can get fairly intense if allowed - its "gritty fantasy" resting point lends itself to muddy brawls in gloomy hamlets against a backdrop of harsh mountains. However, players retain complete control as far as grit, fluids and themes that make it "on-screen", ensuring that while the setting can often be grim, it by no means has to be grimdark.

How will character creation work

Character and world generation happens at the beginning of the session. This can be quite an involved process, so expect up to an hour for this. I will be sending out Ironlands creation as a questionnaire along with consent forms beforehand.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Low
  • Roleplay: High
  • Puzzles: Medium
