About the adventure

This is an epic campaign that will span levels 1 through 12, based on the expanded material available in the new WotC campaign "Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk", which extends the classic Lost Mine of Phandelver with further adventures. It will feature a balance of roleplaying and character development, combat, and exploration. This is a play by post game that will use Discord for asynchronous text-based play. I'm exceptionally active as a DM. I'll usually be online for 12+ hours a day, post many times a day, and generally respond quickly to player actions. I'm active during the typical hours of players in the United States, but players from anywhere are welcome. This will be a beginner-friendly and inclusive campaign. I'm happy to teach D&D 5e mechanics, the PbP tools, and how to write PbP posts. All players will have the opportunity to participate in a solo one-on-one adventure, exploring how you became an adventurer (taking you from level 1 to 2).

Additional Details

How to prepare

You should be able to fully participate in this campaign from any device that can support a browser, including mobile phones, tablets, and computers. Ideally, you should download the Discord app on any device you intend to play from. You should also sign up for a free D&D Beyond account. You are encouraged to eventually pick a portrait for your character. You may optionally configure the Tupperbox bot to present Discord posts as your character.

What I provide

I'll bring my decades of experience running memorable games -- in-person as well as in text -- as well as lots of professional experience writing. I will also bring digital assets: all necessary D&D sourcebooks, maps, illustrations, tools, and music.

Gameplay details

This will be an energetic campaign that will encourage plenty of inter-party interaction as well as interaction with NPCs. To get the most fun out of this experience, you should check our Discord channel and post daily, and you should be able to read and write English comfortably. The Lost Mine of Phandelver is well known as an introductory campaign for D&D 5e and is widely regarded as one of the best D&D campaigns published. I'll be modifying the content (and adding custom content) as needed to keep the fun flowing, and to suit the desires of the players and the actions of the characters. I'm happy to teach the rules and the PbP tools and style to any novices who'd like some help. There are some mild horror themes lurking in the background of this campaign. You may feel free to inform me of any phobias or other triggers that should be avoided.

How will character creation work

When your sign-up is accepted on this StartPlaying site, you'll be given a link to join a Discord server. When you join, you'll be invited to the campaign's channels, where you'll be given detailed instructions on character creation (and given whatever help is necessary). You'll have the opportunity to discuss character concepts with the other players. Once you have a concept, you'll create a character at 1st level and then engage in a brief one-on-one adventure with the DM to flesh out their background and tell the tale of how they became an adventurer. You'll then level up to 2nd level and the party as a whole will come together for the main campaign start.
