Monster of the Week: Destination: MONSTER!
Monster of the Week on Discord, Theater of the Mind, Zoom
About the adventure
Monster of the Week: Destination: MONSTER! is inspired by reality TV shows like Destination: Truth, Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, and The Crocodile Hunter. Each adventure follows your team of reality show monster hunters on a quest to find and deal with dangerous cryptids and other supernatural events in the most chilling places your host, the hunky Dr. Jake Moon, can find. But you'll be playing a member of the reality show team who has more resources and powers than the usual intern. You're not just a hunter; you're a Hunter with a capital 'H'. It's your job to keep the real monsters from hurting anyone AND to keep the rest of the team's cameras pointed the other way while you do so. Every game is different, so come for more than one!
How to prepare
You'll need a computer/phone/tablet/something and a decent mic for connecting to the internet and to Zoom. You'll also need two six-sided dice. And that's pretty much it.
What I provide
I will bring the descriptions. Loads and loads of descriptions (though you'll have a chance at doing some of that, too), plus ambient music, imagery, and ... monsters. Lots and lots of monsters.
This game contains horror, gore, and mature themes not suitable for every gamer. That said, the GM likes to keep things PG-13 to Lovecraftian-horror R-Rated. During our character creation we will also talk about, and implement, gaming safety tools such as lines, veils, and the X Card.
Safety tools used
- Lines and Veils
- Open Door
- X, N, and O Cards
How will character creation work
Monster of the Week is a role-playing game based on the Powered By the Apocalypse game engine. It is rules-light with easy character creation based on 'playbooks' -- character archetypes. Before the game, you'll be able to go to a Google Drive folder and choose a form-fillable character sheet that we will finish at the beginning of the session (character creation in MotW is a group event, to an extent). Make sure you let the rest of us know your choice, though, either here or on the Discord server (SEE prep materials) so that we don't have duplicates.
Players can expect
- Combat/Tactics: Medium
- Roleplay: High
- Puzzles: Low
- Experience Level: None
