About the adventure

Most people don’t believe in monsters, but you know the truth. They’re real, and it’s your task to bring them down. "Monster of the Week" brings that adventure to life. Monster of the Week is a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Winchester brothers of Supernatural, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully. No experience is necessary to play - you will be given a choice of playbooks to play your character, and character creation takes 5-10 minutes prior to game start. Determination of outcomes is powered by a simple 2d6. Only you stand between humanity...and the unknown.

Additional Details

How to prepare

Players will need to either join a Zoom call or join a Discord channel and communicate by audio at minimum, so a headset with mic is recommended in order to hear and be heard. The character sheets within Roll20 do not interact well with the Roll20 Companion app, so you will need access to a desktop/laptop in order to participate. Dice or physical character sheets are not needed - all rolling and access of the character sheets will be on Roll20.

What I provide

A significant portion of the story will be theater of the mind, so character illustration is not necessary. I will provide the story and the obstacles to overcome as well as explanation of the surroundings and guidance for player actions within the game.

Gameplay details

A variety of themes, from the monsters themselves to those hunting them and all points in between, could possibly trigger players. We will use the consent checklist and Session 0 to determine anything problematic to avoid and/or gloss over as a party.

How will character creation work

Characters will be created at session start by selecting a playbook and filling out the details of their character in a process that should take about 15 minutes. Then they spend time determining the connections the characters have with one another before the mystery begins. The rules will be explained as well - prior experience is always helpful but not necessary. If the players wish to move to playing the game faster, there are existing "hunter groups" in game with pre-existing character sheets to use.
