About the adventure

The house has stood abandoned on its lonely hilltop, brooding quietly over the ruins of a once thriving town for decades. No one has lived within its walls since the night a terrific storm flooded the coastal town below—and since a tragedy struck down the noble family that once dwelt within—but now, the mansion has attracted the attention of a curious group of adventurers. What is the truth behind the tragic past that empowers the evil that grips the mansion today, and what might happen to the world of Golarion if the sinister influences that grow within these haunted walls are allowed to build beyond the breaking point? Malevolence is a horror-themed adventure for 3rd-level characters written by James Jacobs featuring sinister new monsters, mysterious magical items and spells to discover, and a fully-detailed haunted house for players to explore, exorcise, and endure. With an immersive method of researching the history and truths of the mansion's macabre secrets through visions, dreams, and good-old fashioned ghost-hunting and investigation, Malevolence is ready to test the limits of any heroic party's bravery! This is a short-term campaign that should take players from 3rd to 6th level - it should take no more than six weekly sessions of three hours to complete. We will be playing over Discord and the Foundry VTT (hosted on Forge).

How to prepare

A good quality microphone (preferably a headset) is required to use Discord. I also strongly encourage players to use video during games. Games using video conferencing are usually more enjoyable for all parties, as video prevents misunderstandings and miscommunication. In addition you will need (free) accounts for Discord and Forge - the site hosting our Foundry VTT session.

What I provide

All handouts, maps, art, and character-building resources will be provided electronicaly either through Foundry or Discord. You do not need to make any other purchases to participate in this game.

Gameplay details

This is not a typical Pathfinder adventure. While players can use their combat skills and magic to avoid danger in the short term, successfully completing the adventure relies on investigative skills. During our session zero we will discuss any potentially sensitive subjects that we wish as a group to avoid. The grim tone of the campaign is not merely atmosphereic: the adventure includes themes of domestic violence, child murder, and animal death, that some players might wish to avoid altogether. Any language or behaviour that makes other players feel unwelcome or uncomfortable at the table will not be tolerated.

How will character creation work

Player characters will start at 3rd level, and should reach 6th level at the end of the adventure. Characters should be created in consultation with the GM before the first session, though we will try to create a group background together during session zero. You will find a campaign guide on Discord with information about building appropriate characters for this adventure. Please note that this campaign emphasizes investigation and research skills, and as such is the ideal place to try out some of the classes that thrive in those challenges, including the Investigator, the Bard, the Thaumaturge, and some Rogues. We will be using the Free Archetype option, so that you can begin with an archetype at level 3 without delaying your class progression. As normal with Pathfinder 2E, we will be using the "character wealth by level" table so that you can select appropriate equipment before the start of the game.
