About the adventure
Step into a DnD 5e world where darkness has been waiting, watching, and gathering strength for decades. Mysterious forces are preparing to step into the light of day, and their allies are everywhere. Can this band of adventurers make a difference in the face of overwhelming odds? We lean into Horror, Fantasy and Travel. The forces of darkness believe their victory is inevitable, their chosen time to arise perfect. Strongholds are prepared for battle and nearly unassailable. They will take the might of nations to overcome, and they have divided the world with greed, fear and suspicion. You will adventure across the realm, trying to unite the disparate factions of the world. There will be cursed forests, treacherous canyons, endless deserts, and more. Queens may want to behead you. Kings will want to use you. Every merchant, maiden and mercenary will have a basement full of rats or stolen wagons to find! The adventurers will fight foes both magical and mundane on this world and others. There will be foes that stoke primal fears and enemies that would give pause to an army. However, it all starts in the small town of Dallia's Saddle, a trade town high in the mountains at the cusp of winter. The festival of First Frost is about to begin, the final celebration before the snows come blowing in, and the pass that keeps the city alive becomes sealed with ice, snow and goblins. A quasi-sandbox adventure where you know your goals, you know which way to go and some of the obstacles in your path. It is up to the party to determine the exact path to ultimate victory. The campaign is open enough to go explore that crumbling castle over there, oh wait, and that cave shaped like a panther, but focused enough to know exactly where you SHOULD be going. Gameplay is centered around a 4 hour session with a 15-20 minute break in the middle for everyone's needs. Which brings a total session time of approximately 4.5 hours. Its usually enough time to get some good combat and some good roleplaying in, a good feeling of progression.
How to prepare
This is designed as a virtual campaign, but it could be modified for in-person. 1) Grab a tasty beverage of your choosing! 2) You will need a quality mic and headphones (preferably "gaming" style headphones) Please. PLEASE replace, janky, staticky, intermittent or quiet mics. Being able to clearly hear each other is extremely important for everyone's enjoyment. 3) A webcam is optional. It is nice to see peoples faces, however! 4) You will need a Discord account and the app downloaded and ready to go. I'll send an invite to my Discord channel. 5) You will need a non-Safari or non-tablet internet browser. There are a dozen great choices and many more acceptable ones. (Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, etc) 6) House Rules will be available for viewing in Foundry VTT. 7) Put some genuine thought into what you would like to play, and what you will do if someone else wants to play the same thing. While your party will not need to be "optimal" to survive, party composition should be considered.
What I provide
I'll bring a little bit of thunder and a little bit of lightning. I'll be providing all tokens, images, maps and more. You just need to bring your funbone, group mentality and beverages of choice. Monocles are optional, but encouraged.
Players can expect a world turning towards darkness. Death, mental illnesses and dark tones will live alongside love, laughter, adventure and joyful nights in a pub. The theme of the adventure is bringing the world out of darkness, which means PCs will be exposed to evil and their machinations. And hopefully prevail! An important part of this campaign is the PCs mental health, balancing their exposure to Evil against the joys of sunrises and unspoiled nature. They will not be mired in terrible experiences or endlessly slog through misery, but these topics will be touched upon and are integral parts of the campaign mechanics. Roleplaying the insanities your characters encounter is meant to deepen the bond with your character, and make them seem more three-dimensional, not "punish" the players.

How will character creation work
Character creation will be handled during Session 0. Players will be able to choose one source book of their choosing for character development. All classes and alignments are available, but group harmony takes precedence. (I do expect players to roleplay their choices, this is a roleplaying game. I've been known to unfairly punish extreme meta-power-gamers that only choose things for numerical advantages and ignore the roleplaying disadvantages of those choices.)
