About the adventure

Kids on Bikes is a narrative ttrpg where you play a kid (with a bike!) in a small town, solving strange mysteries and getting involved with strange personages a la Stranger Things, ET, and Super 8. Return to the 80s of yesteryear and spend your free time dealing with supernatural shenanigans rather than doomscrolling Twitter ... 'cause in the 80s, there weren't no Twitter! But there WAS ET!

How to prepare

You're going to need a good-sounding microphone and a connection to the internet (it's an online game, after all). I like to see my player's beaming faces, especially since Kids on Bikes takes place primarily in Theater of the Mind, but I certainly understand if you don't or can't use a webcam for whatever reason. I'll be providing everything else you need before and during the game.

What I provide

I'll be giving you links to Discord and Zoom before the game starts.

Gameplay details

In Kids on Bikes, you'll play one of the kid (or teenage, or even adult) archetypes of those 80s and 80s-nostalgia movies and tv shows like ET, Super 8, Short Circuit, and, of course Stranger Things. Your archetype comes with six attributes represented by die types (d4, d6, and so forth up to d20). Whenever you need to do something requiring a check, you roll the appropriate die type and try to beat a DC set by the GM. So that's easy and cool. But even cooler is that all the players get to share the role-playing aspects of a 'powered' character -- perhaps that character is akin to ET, or Eleven, or a robot, or a magic horse, or a talking bike ... imagination is the limit and we'll figure that out while we're finishing up our characters at the beginning of the game. Kids on Bikes is about, well, kids on bikes confronting supernatural mysteries. This game can get pretty spooky, and even though it's about kids, mature themes can crop up, and the game is likely to have instances of spookiness that might be too extreme for some players. CW: spookiness, violence, horror, adults not believing kids, and dangerous situations. Because Kids on Bikes is a shared narrative experience, unexpected moments may happen, as well, so we'll be using Gaming Safety Tools such as Lines/Veils/and the X-Card, as well as an Open Door policy. We'll talk about all of those before the game starts. And then we'll get to the creepy fun!

How will character creation work

You'll need to log in to the Discord server (there will be a link in the Prep Material for the adventure) and go to the #docs-kids-on-bikes channel to choose an archetype from choices such as The Brilliant Mathlete, The Brutish Jock, The Conspiracy Theorist, The Loner Weirdo, The Popular Kid, the Wannabe, and others. Then we'll flesh out your character at the beginning of the session.
