About the adventure

A one-hour, escape room-style introductory D&D one-shot! "Round up the usual suspects," the Prince ordered, and the Guard immediately marched down to the local tavern to being rousting the regulars. How you wound up among the apprehended is a blur; wrong place, wrong time probably. But now here you are. In jail. As you sit in your cell amongst your fellow detainees awaiting questioning about some unknown crime, it becomes clear that perhaps escape is the smarter option, as "actual guilt" is apparently not a prerequisite for a death sentence in this land. All the while, you're doing everything you can to keep your own shady past from coming to light. Because after all, everybody is guilty of something...

How to prepare

- Players will need a webcam, a microphone, and a strong internet connection to participate. - Familiarity with the basic rules is encouraged ahead of time, but not required. - Interested players can use the Beyond20 extension for Chrome or Firefox to integrate their D&D Beyond character sheet into the VTT.

What I provide

Players who request pre-gen characters are welcome to export the sheets in PDF format after the game and use them in future adventures!

Gameplay details

This module is designed to introduce new players to the three pillars of D&D: Exploration (specifically puzzles, in this adventure), Social Interaction, and of course, Combat. There's a little bit of everything in this fast-paced co-operative adventure. Players can expect a decent amount of in-character role play with NPCs, and they will be encouraged to talk in character with one another as they plan and attempt a daring escape. That's where the puzzles come in, as this is no ordinary jail, but one with magical runes locking individual cells. Players will have to solve puzzles to open the cell doors and make their way to freedom. Which brings us to the final encounter! There are ways for players to escape without drawing even a drop of blood, but for those who wish to exact a measure of revenge, they'll have ample opportunity to do so before the night is through. For beginners, I take more of a free-form "theatre of the mind" approach to combat in this adventure, rather than using tokens and maps. Folks who play this are usually first-timers who are still learning how to navigate their character sheets; no need to overwhelm them with movement speed, positioning, etc. However, for more experienced players, I'm happy to bust out the battle maps!

How will character creation work

This adventure is designed for level 1 characters. I prefer to use D&D Beyond and integrate it into Roll20 with the Beyond20 extension, but players are welcome to set up their sheets in Roll20 directly. Pre-generated characters available upon request!
