About the adventure

Are you interested in learning to play Cypher System? Do you play 5e D&D but are looking to branch out for... reasons? Cypher System is a generic TTRPG engine that can be used to run a wide variety of settings and genres, including fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary settings. It features a narratively driven character creation system that allows players to create unique and interesting characters with their own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities. It is designed to be easy to learn and fast-paced, making it ideal for both experienced and new role-players. The system is good for players who enjoy a fast-paced, action-oriented style of play, as the mechanics are designed to keep the game moving quickly and to make it easy for players to take on a variety of different roles and actions in the game. It's also well suited for players who enjoy a lot of narrative freedom, as the game is designed to encourage creativity and improvisation both from the players and the GM. Additionally, the Cypher system is good for those who like to experiment with different characters and settings, as the system can be used to run a wide variety of genres and settings, and the character creation system allows for a lot of customization. This session will likely make use of the Numenara 'flavor' of the Cypher System, but other options are possible if the group comes to a consensus. Numenera is a Science Fantasy genre, set 1 billion years into earth's future where humanity lives in a world of ruins and remnants left behind by the eight previous civilizations that have risen and fallen. These civilizations left behind advanced technology, called "numenera", that is beyond the understanding of the current inhabitants and nearly indistinguishable from magic. The setting is characterized by a mix of medieval and post-apocalyptic elements, with a focus on exploration and discovery. If that sounds interesting and you want to check it out, this free intro session will give you everything you need to get up to speed with the system.

How to prepare

You can get a head start with the rules by getting the rules primer here: https://www.montecookgames.com/cypher-system-rules-primer/ . You should aim to be familiar with the basic concepts, but as this is an introductory game we will be learning as we play. You will need a Roll 20 account, a Discord account, and a camera. I'll send links to the campaign and discord server once you sign up. You can bring physical dice if you want to use them, or you can roll the digital dice in Roll20 if you prefer. You will need a Cypher System Character Sheet to record the details of your character. This can be digital or physical, whatever your preference is.

What I provide

Roll 20 set up including ambient scenes and tactical combat maps, music, source books, and a really great attitude :)

Safety tools used
  • Breaks
  • Lines and Veils
  • X, N, and O Cards
How will character creation work

We will start with Tier 1 characters. Ideally you should have a character concept in mind and a character sheet created, but we can use the first 30 minutes to finalize character options and answer questions together. Since this is an introductory game, don't worry about having questions or changing things as we learn, that's the point of the session!

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Medium
  • Roleplay: Medium
