About the adventure

The Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) roleplaying game is a storytelling game driven by imagination. It’s about picturing a crumbling dungeon in a misty mountain and imagining how an adventurer might react to the challenges with each step into the unknown. If you're new to D&D or want to start learning more about the rules of the game, we will walk through a few of the introductory concepts to get you started on the road to adventure! No experience is needed. The session will begin with a discussion about the roles of both the Player and the Dungeon Master, as well as, the basic concepts and structures of a typical session, scene, adventure, and campaign. We'll talk about assumptions, expectations, and responsibilities when participating in a tabletop role-playing game like D&D. Next we will talk about an overview of the rules and gameplay including actions that can be taken throughout each person's turn within the game. We'll sort out things like Actions, Bonus Actions, Reactions, Movement, and other basic rules. You will level up in your understanding of the concepts needed to participate in each round of a game. Lastly, we will discuss character creation, focusing on blending mechanics and concepts to create a fun and exciting playing character. By the end of the session you will have a first level character generated within D&D Beyond. You'll be ready to start your adventure!

How to prepare

The players will need a few things to be ready for the session. (1) A device that can access both Discord and D&D Beyond. (2) An active Discord account that can be added to a server by the host for ease of communication. (3) An active account with D&D Beyond, and an open slot to create a character. All that is needed is the basic and free content of the Basic Rules SRD. If you have purchased content that you want to use, that's a bonus for you! (4) A mic will be needed if the player wishes to use voice in Discord. Otherwise, we will communicate through text. Whichever is more inclusive and comfortable for the player. Cameras are usually not used, but if the player requests it then there is no problem. The player will need to use their own webcam. (5) Be ready for complications. We will adapt and overcome to the best of our abilities. The internet can be a complicated place sometimes.

What I provide

I will be using my D&D Beyond and Discord accounts. I have a server created that can be used if the player is comfortable with that, and I will provide a link to join the server. It is simply called "Start Playing." I will have my own mic and camera, ready to use if the player wishes.

Gameplay details

This session will cover basic concepts and constructs of the basics of playing Dungeons & Dragons. There will be a lot of discussion, and you will be expected to respond and share your ideas, feelings, and expectations when it comes to playing role-playing games. We'll talk about how to make the game fun while also pointing out behaviors to avoid. Although we will talk about the core rules needed for gameplay, we won't really play through anything beyond examples of common scenes and situations. The tone is intended to be light, and straightforward. This is supposed to be fun, right? Let's have a good time and learn about a an exciting game.

How will character creation work

We will create a 1st level character in D&D Beyond using the character generator tool. The host will walk the players through each step, discussing the methods and choices to be made to make an awesome character. The players have the choice to create a character beforehand if they wish for the host to review with them, or they can create the character during the session. Whichever is more comfortable is just fine.
