About the adventure

The dungeon ahead looms before you, dark and ominous stone at odds with the welcoming stonework of the outer walls where younger delvers gather around veterans to listen to stories and advice on surviving the dungeon. The lord's men keeping track of who enters and exits. Healers providing aid to a few unlucky delvers. The dungeon itself almost seeming to quiver with anticipation as a group enters the dark archway. This is an open table, each session a stand alone episode game intended to introduce you to my GMing style, my world of Recreation, and my heavily modified version of dnd 3.5. To facilitate this with a quick start, I have pregens so we can jump into play more quickly. If you like the game, we can setup a campaign or you can just return every Monday to play without the strings of commitment. This game will remain at a pretty low level of power and thus is gritty and dangerous. Recreation is a universe created by the sole surviving goddess of a destroyed reality and I basically roleplayed her creation of the world. It is therefore a particularly novel setting despite many familiar elements. Notably, dungeons are living entities created by the goddess as a test for mortals, survival is rewarded with many unique materials and even the occasional magic artifact. Each of the major races has a racial sin they are supposed to overcome and a related power. The system. I heavily modified 3.5. I use the 3d6 and Players Roll All The Dice variants from UA. I altered how health anc injuries work with a few tweaks to weapons and armor. I also shifted level based stats to be based on a Power stat (ie instead of character level or class level use Power), and made a few advancement adjustments so power such as gritty vs heroic vs demigods can be set and advanced independently of character experience. Class levels are gained when power improves, but between them are skill levels. You can gain around 30-50 levels while remaining about as strong as level 1-5 normal dnd 3 characters. Also, I adjusted magic vs martial so magic is very versatile but has lower dmg output and can be used a lot more. I also made combat and magic into skills. Running the game. If you liked old school play and mentality but with d20ish mechanics, well that's what I aim for in my games. The mechanics are more about description rather than prescribing what characters can do. I selected 18+ more so we don't have to worry about whether we are kid friendly rather than any expectation to be explicit.

How to prepare

This will be on my discord server with voice chat, so a discord account and mic will be required. Nothing else will be needed aside from your wits and imagination, and preferably leave video game logic at home.

What I provide

I bring quick no commitment one shots with premade characters and an obvious objective. I also bring verisimilitude, enemies act realistically in general and I can handle crazy ideas (the only limits being that it needs to make sense in the world and for your character's capabilities). Dead characters (because I will bring the lethality) can play some of the monsters to keep on playing. I bring voices and characters that are not always certain of motives. Even in the depths of a dungeon, some monsters might be friendly. I do not bring any safe zones, monsters can attack at any time. As I lack a real computer at the moment, I don't have much else to offer beyond an enjoyable, and sometimes terrifying, gameplay experience.

Gameplay details

If all it takes is one mention of something and you need to leave, I'm not the right gm for you. I believe in having at least a little bit of thick skin and when things do get uncomfortable for you, to have a real conversation about it and not feel bad if you're the one that has an issue with the content (we'll either accommodate you anyway or wish you well). That said, this is all one shots and thus not really worth spending extensive time discussing such issues before play. Besides, the goal here, aside from fun, is to find out if I'm the right GM for you, so there will be no hard feelings from me if I'm not a good fit for you.

How will character creation work

As one shots for a homebrew setting and a heavily modified d20 system, I've made several pregens that can be selected and characterized to get into things quickly and without worrying about optimal builds or the mechanics of creation. Pick one you like, then we can spend a few minutes making minor tweaks such as swapping the race or weapon and filling in a couple of character details. However the idea is to get to play quickly.
