About the adventure

It's the stuff of legend. Plato's tales of the sunken utopia have confounded explorers for millennia—until now. The expedition is stocked, the seas are fair, and the dive suits are prepped! It's as they say—fortune favors the bold. Suit up, adventurer! In this unique beginner-friendly one-shot, become the first visitors to set foot inside the fabled lost city of Atlantis in over two thousand years. Face its trials, unlock its mysteries, and learn the secrets of its fate—or just loot the place for all it's worth! After all, you think these fancy dive suits just financed themselves?! Explore the sunken city in beautiful three-dimensional maps powered by the intuitive tabletop sandbox, Tabletop Simulator. Don't own a copy of Tabletop Sim? No problem! There are FREE GUEST COPIES available to use! All you need is a decent microphone and a Windows or Macintosh computer that can render 3D graphics. If you've never played an RPG on Tabletop Sim before, you're in for a treat! Original photo by Yue Su on Unsplash

How to prepare

This game can be run on either Roll20 or Tabletop Simulator—the latter is the true experience, rendered on beautiful 3D game maps with an intuitive control scheme, but we can always use Roll20 instead if necessary. You should have a microphone for either platform, and ideally a Windows or Macintosh computer capable of rendering 3D graphics. You do NOT NEED TO OWN A COPY OF TABLETOP SIMULATOR to play in said version—I have guest copies you can use if you need them. If you intend to use a guest copy, it's worth showing up half an hour to an hour early to get set up or otherwise reaching out in advance. Beyond that, just bring your character sheet and a good attitude. For Roll20, it's worth finding 2D character art to use. Finding character art in advance is optional for Tabletop Simulator, as there will also be a wide selection of 3D character models to pick from. New to StartPlaying? What I provide

The magic ✨ And a selection of pre-made characters to offer if needed. I will also provide any guest copies of Tabletop Sim as necessary. Again, if you don't own a copy of the game and need to use a guest copy, please get in touch ahead of time so we can set you up and make sure everything works.

Gameplay details

This game will put the players right into the adventure from the start—no Awkward Inn, no antagonistic contract negotiation, no fuss. You're on an expedition, and it's time to jump to it! Any themes that would typically need a special content warning are unlikely to arise, but we'll still run through lines and veils beforehand to just make sure everyone feels safe during play. Encounters will be relatively low-complexity to give newer players room to learn the fundamental mechanics. The session will present players with opportunities to explore, interact with the world, roleplay—and fight for their (characters') lives!

How will character creation work

Characters will be level 3 with standard starter equipment, and completed character sheets should be brought to the game. Pre-made characters are also offered as an option. In-depth backstories are not required for this particular game—a set of traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws ought to be enough, as long as your character is willing to work together with others.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: High

  • Roleplay: Medium

  • Puzzles: Low

  • Experience Level: Open to all
