About the adventure

A year ago, Prince Strahd von Zarovich and his coterie returned to his ancestral seat of Barovia after years of campaigning in the Theresian Civil War upon the news of his father's death, Prince Barov von Zarovich III. To shock and dismay, he found his brother, Sergei von Zarovich had already ascended Barovia's throne and claimed his beloved Tatyana as his own wife. Enraged, Strahd attempted to claim Sergei's life, to make use of the arts he had refined on Theresian battlefields but was ultimately brought low. His life was snuffed from him, vitality drained from his eyes and his last exhale carried the barest wisp of his essence. But death is no barrier when passions run so great, bite so deep, and burn so hot. In his final moments, he rebuked the hands of the Usher and the proffered door and his twisted soul damned Barovia, or what dregs of it he has dragged into the depths of the Shadowfell with him. Reborn as a cursed vampire, Strahd is trapped in the nebulous confines of this pale imitation of Barovia, desperate to find a way to escape and return to the Prime Material Plane to wreak vengeance on Sergei and Tatyana! You are his spawn, his coterie, the courtiers of his midnight aristocracy. Having earned his attention in the battlefields of Theresia, he has brought you to Barovia that cursed year ago and you saw your dearest friend and brother of battle brought to death. In his twisted realm of damnation, you are among those he trusts to find a way to help him escape Barovia, or perhaps the man you knew is now too far gone... There are others in his court that may seek to take advantage of the situation, to stay loyal or to claim this damned Barovia for themselves, and there are other powers in the Shadowfell that may wish to make prey of the newly arrived in this plane of dread and shadow... Additional Details

How to prepare

All players will need are themselves, their characters, and a mic. I, as the DM, will have my camera on, but that's just so I can convey body language to my players and not a requirement that you need to do for me. For the past year, I have been the only camera on in our discord calls and that's perfectly fine We will be playing on Roll20, so almost everything will be stored there and if not, the campaign Discord

What I provide

The campaign is online, run through Roll20, so I will be making maps, handouts, and NPC sheets that you can reference throughout the campaign organized by faction affiliation

Gameplay details

While all of the content warnings tags are fair to be included, this is a D&D campaign, violence is expected to some degree. None of these themes are very prominent throughout the campaigns that I run, but it would be unfair of me to assume that just because of that, they don't exist. This is a darkish setting with darkish themes, nothing crazy cruel but be prepared for the typical amount of violence and oh noes from a D&D campaign

How will character creation work

We'll start at level 3 or 5, depending on how we feel. We'll use a modified point buy system that doesn't penalize high stats so that everyone has the same relative power level but with the ease of customizing your characters as you see fit. We'll discuss ideas at session 0, but at the end of the day, flavor is free! We can try to reflavor anything we want or rebalance as we see fit so we can bring your character concept to life.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Low
  • Roleplay: High
  • Puzzles: Low
  • Experience Level: Open to all
