About the adventure

The year is 1979, but the history is not our own... Jump into the Weird West, where you can become a cowpoke, a lawdog, a gambler, or even a card-slinging huckster casting spells based on secret knowledge found in the book of Hoyle. During this one shot, we will be playing through a short adventure designed to introduce you to the settings and mechanics of Deadlands and the Savage Rules (Adventure Edition) system. The posse will take on the roles of hands hired by Smith and Robards to deliver a infernal contraption to the town of small Manti. Along the way they will learn the the Weird West is not always as it seems and not for the faint of heart.

How to prepare

A microphone and a reasonably quiet setting is required to play this game (or pretty much any game online). If you're not familiar with the Deadlands setting or Savage Worlds system (or if you just want to hype yourself up for the experience). I would recommend checking out a YouTube playthrough or two. Just search Deadlands and you'll find several. (I rather enjoyed Critical Role's Undeadwood series myself, though that's not quite what our experience will be).

What I provide

I will bring maps and handouts for combat and story play and my many years of roleplaying and cooperative storytelling experience. I will have a selection of token images to use for a variety of character options as well as a selection of pregen character options (and the official Deadlands setting module for Foundry from Pinnacle!) Lastly, but most important, I will bring the setting and an introduction for your characters into the story of the new world.

Gameplay details

We will be using an informal method for handling content triggers; If you start to feel uncomfortable with an element of the story play at any time, for any reason, just let me know privately. Also, if there are any story elements we should avoid, let me know during session 0. Content warnings: There may be historical and fantasy themes in the game storyline which would be considered problematic today such as slavery, racism, violence, and horror which have nevertheless sometimes historically been part of the genre. There presence does not imply that the GM, or anyone else, condones or promotes such concepts and behavior. I do not, and I assume my players do not. If you do, then please keep such opinions to yourself.

How will character creation work

I will have several pre-generated character options available for players who are unfamiliar with role-playing games or with the system used or who just don't want to put that much skull sweat into a one shot. Those who want to create their own character, can do so themselves (provided they are familiar enough with the rules) or can contact the Marshall for other options.

Players can expect

  • Combat/Tactics: Low
  • Roleplay: Medium
  • Puzzles: Low
