About the adventure

Learning to make your own characters is a great part of Dungeons & Dragons! Picking a character build that you will enjoy, and developing a person with a personality and flexible backstory are all parts of the fun process. Making a character that not only interests you but can also be brought into a wider variety of games is a good skill to have, and will make your games run much smoother! In this One-Shot, we will look at character creation options, come up with different inspirations for characters, and look at making those ideas flexible for joining D&D games. Then we will, if time is available, do a brief One-Shot adventure! Your party is a group of adventurers looking to cross the Noman Saw Sea from the religiously restrictive country of Noss Farii to the magic-haven land of Hyrend. But as you get to the port city of Fren Dindo, you realize this may not be as simple a task as you thought. You'll need to find a way to get onto a ship, and then protect it!

How to prepare

Come with the physical or digital character sheet of your choice ready and blank! If you don't have one, I can provide a link to a decent digital sheet. If you plan on making it in D&D Beyond, just know you will only have the basic options on there unless you purchase content on their site. Also, please come with questions! The point of this is to learn (and have fun), so its helpful to know what you want to learn! Are you trying to up the efficiency and power of your build? Trying to get advice on picking spells? Maybe you're a brand new player and somehow have found yourself in the deep end! Or maybe you've got the build down, but need help making your character a "character".

What I provide

I won't have any physical or digital bonuses for you, but by the end of the session you will have a character that... 1. Functions well with gameplay and mechanics 2. Build choices driven by flavor and backstory themes 3. Can work not only in the D&D campaign of your dreams, but in many different campaigns! As for what I bring to the table, I have had years of experience playing the game, and have taught well over a hundred people how to play this amazing game. That's players with absolutely no experience in any sort of RPG, or seasoned vets that want to make their character feel "real. That's kids in afterschool clubs, family members who are mostly curious about the hobby, friends and adults who are just beginning their journey, and everyone in between.

Gameplay details

We will start off with introductions, then we will dive in to different character creation mentalities (build vs person), start looking at build options, and then start fleshing out the character more with some probing RPG questions. If basics of gameplay need to be covered as well, we can go over them (especially with relevance to character creation in mind). If the character creation portion goes smoothly, I'll run a brief one-shot so you guys can try out your characters, start to slip into their shoes, maybe find out anything you do/don't like about them and want to change.

How will character creation work

We will be making level 3 characters, for two reasons. 1. Level 3 is still relatively low, so you won't be hit with a ton of abilities all at once. 2. By level 3 every class has chosen their subclass, which is a big part of character creation. We will be creating them together in the session, so no need to come with them made. If you do have one made or partially made and want some help, we can do that as well.

Players can expect

  • Roleplay: High
  • Puzzles: Low
