About the adventure

Critical Role is playing a new game! It's called Candela Obscura and in it, you are the member of a secret society whose purpose is to hold back the darkness that tries constantly to breach its way into the world. YOU are the light in the dark, the shield against the night, and the shining blade held forth to challenge evil. In "Dark Carnival", it is 1930s America and the Depression is in full swing. There are still holdouts of opulence and luxury--New York City, Chicago, Hollywood--but much of the United States is a landscape of dust, poverty, and hardscrabble. Criminals, snake oil salesmen, and morally-questionable entrepreneurs of all stripes prey upon the desperate and the hungry. But something else preys upon them too. Among the legitimate carnies and the back roads harbingers there is a rumor of a Dark Carnival whose rides, shows, attractions...and monsters...appear here one day, there another, in the shadows of an alley in St Louis, in the basement of a roadhouse in Kansas, in the dressing room of a diva in L.A. You must track down these threats as they appear and send them back to the hell they came from, or die trying. And eventually, maybe, if you're good enough, and lucky enough, maybe track these incursions back to the heart of the Dark Carnival itself, to dismantle it for good. Candela Obscura is a game by Darrington Press and uses the Illuminated Worlds game engine. The games in the Dark Carnival Series will use the Quickstart rules until the full ruleset becomes available. Come play the game in its very infancy!

Additional Details

How to prepare

This game is played online over Zoom, with pre-game discussion and Lines and Veils available via our Monroe Street Adventurers' Guild Discord server, so you'll need access to both of those (with free accounts), as well as access to a decent microphone and, preferably, a dark, quiet place to game in, for the purpose of enhancing the atmosphere. The GM will be streaming his own video, but whether you use video or not is optional. You'll also need 6 six-sided dice (three of a different color), or you can use the dice roller that is available on the Discord server.

What I provide

I bring imagination, character voices, evocative imagery, and atmospheric music to every game. There is also a Discord server to keep things organized, as well as a Google Drive where you can find pre-generated Agents, quick reference pages, and the Quickstart rules set for Candela Obscura.

Gameplay details

This is a horror game of hope in a world that has little. As such, there will be disturbing images and descriptions, but also exciting investigations, chases, and combats! To make sure that this roller coaster of a ride is as safe as we can make it, we'll be uses Lines, Veils, and the X-Card (there will be a channel available on the Discord--See Prep Materials), all of which will be explained and/or reviewed in the Discord and in the first few minutes of each game. Even in a horror game, I try to keep my games at PG-13 to a soft R-rating.

How will character creation work

Since we're using the Quickstart rules (at least for now), and the Dark Carnival games are episodic, pre-generated Agents from the Quickstart will be made available on a first-claimed, first-served basis. Links to these will be found in the Prep Materials once you've signed up for the game.
