About the adventure

"Today is Saturday, December 22nd; the first day of winter break. High school junior Alice Briarwood was last seen on Wednesday, three days ago." This game is semi-serious in tone with possible mature themes centered around the struggle of teenagers and loss. Set in the recession-hit small coastal town of Silent Falls, Alice's friends and siblings struggle to piece together clues surrounding her disappearance and find out what happened." This is a silent RPG played by text on Discord (invitation to server will be sent during setup) and with cards that prompt and inform the story being turned over in Roll20. The game plays for a hard 90 minutes, with setup and debrief combined taking an hour to an hour and a half. A portion of game proceeds will go to benefit Don't Be A Monster, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering youth to stand up for themselves and their peers by building a community where everyone is included, no matter their differences.

How to prepare

They will need a Discord account and a Roll20 account. They are not required to know the system, but if they have a few minutes to spare before game, players can check out this short video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0lHrwNlZ4 about gameplay. Or this longer one, showing the premiere of the game as it was played for GenCon 2020 - https://youtu.be/jVXAlCKFC48 Lastly, have some manner of voice recording software available, or even a phone app. One of the elements of this game is a voicemail recording each player will record at the end of our setup: The last message they each sent Alice before her disappearance.

What I provide

I will facilitate the game by playing as Charlie Barnes (she/her) and will keep the gameplay running to time and without our requested Lines and Veils. I will run a short debrief after gameplay has ended, to talk about the story we just told and unwind from possibly high emotions.

Gameplay details

Just to cover content warnings and our lines and veils in plenty of time - "ALICE IS MISSING inherently deals with topics of lack of agency, death, grief, helplessness, loss, tense family dynamics, and violence. Player discretion is advised. The circumstances around missing women often involve violence, sexual violence, date rape, teenager-adult relationships, partner abuse, problems at home, victim blaming, and death." Our session can include as much or as little as that as we decide (it's a Horror Convention after all), but keep that in mind when playing this sort of game and please be aware that we will be discussing Lines and Veils; consent-based control of the use of these themes to make sure all our players remain comfortable.

How will character creation work

The characters for this session (and their relationship with Alice) are: * Charlie Barnes - The One Who Moved Away - This character is the facilitator role and will be played by me - Charlie left town after a messy divorce to live with her mom, but is back in town to spend winter break with her dad and old friends. * Dakota Travis - The Best Friend * Jack Briarwood - The Older Brother * Julia North - The Secret Girlfriend * Evan Holwell - The One With the Crush Players will select their character during setup and answer a few background questions about their person and their relationship with Alice to help shape our story before we start.
