About me

I’m CIS, white, male, neurodivergent, pansexual-panromantic and the type of person who respects it if you need to know those things about me before we play. I gotchu. I’ve been running games for about 15 years now, I spend so much time on it that I can’t justify it financially, anymore, without charging. Over time I’ve gotten very improvisational, preferring to leap right into session zero and let the character discussion fuel my plans. I prefer play by post, and I like my familiar systems, but I’m charging for this, I’m aware of my limits and capabilities, and I’m very particular, so you can expect the utmost effort at making this experience right for you; Any system you want I can learn. This is my safe space, and I aim to share that safety with everyone involved; Lines and veils will be anonymous and unchallenged. Prejudice and abuse will not be tolerated, repeat offenders and their icky money will be kicked out and not invited back.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be making characters with gestalt leveling, meaning each level up results in a level in two classes. A level one character might be a rogue and a fighter for instance. That same character can grow to be a level 20 fighter and a level 20 rogue. There’s a list of 9 custom pirate items, which each player will be given an additional 200 starting GP in order to purchase from. “Additional” meaning on top of what your dual classes provide. This includes homebrew guns, swords, bombs, any non-magical item, and cheap spellwrought tattoos. There’s a list of 12 custom feats from which each player will choose 3. Each custom feat is loosely based on the positions and roles aboard a nautical vessel. From steering the ship to out-gamblin’ yer mateys, there’s something for everyone. With Limithrons Guide to Naval Combat in effect, each player will start off with a 1d4 “Sailing Die” which is added to ship based actions. The average of the sailing dice will go up as you level. The Stat Array is as follows: 18. 16. 16. 12. 10. 6.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You’ll need a Discord, and you’ll need to join the Owlbear Rodeo server.

What Jeremy brings to the table

Limithrons Guide to Naval Combat, which adds a list of ships ranging from dinky little rafts to first rate ships of the line that can crew 400, rules and roles for crewing those ships, maps and tokens, and of course, the rules of engagement on the waters. This cost me $20! A homebrew setting inspired by Earth during the Golden Age of Piracy, replete with warring naval behemoths, bloodthirsty colonists, and the distant trade of commodities and people alike. Read the lore dump or don’t, you’ve watched Pirates of the Caribbean. I also do a pretty good pirate voice.

Homebrew rules

As I’ve mentioned, we’ll be using gestalt style leveling, originally introduced in D&D 3.5’s Unearthed Arcana supplement.

Safety

How Jeremy creates a safe table

We’ll set up lines and veils during session 0, either publicly or in a private DM. Repeated violations of these lines and veils despite a warning will result in a ban. The setting is inspired by 17th century Earth, so I’ve listed all the potential content warnings that might come up, as well as certain things that come up in D&D in general. This game isn’t going to be some right wing safe space where we practice prejudice and hate openly just because we’re roleplaying pirates. The worst of these themes are here to be juxtaposed to, they’re here to be overcame, and most importantly they’re here discretionarily.
