About the adventure

The year is 1924, and America is in the midst of a cultural, technological and economic boom. Women have gained nationwide suffrage, mass media is on the rise, and jazz music fills every street corner. Prohibition is in full effect, and organized crime and speakeasies thrive. Just recently, a local landlord named Steven Knott has bought a property near the edge of town for cheap, but the place is surrounded by fear and superstition. Knott wishes for you to research the place's history and spend a night there to confirm nothing is wrong, promising a generous payment for your services. Seems easy enough, right? This will be a short campaign (2-4 sessions) geared towards helping new players learn to play Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. Character creation will be covered, along with investigation and combat.

About me

Heya! My name is Brandon, though everyone online calls me Dok. I'm a veteran of TTRPGs, both running and playing for about 15 years now. I got my start with some old 1st edition D&D books my father gave me when I was 12. Nowadays, I run all sorts of stuff on a regular basis, ranging from staples like D&D 5E to Call of Cthulhu to more obscure systems like All Flesh Must be Eaten. I fancy myself as quite personable, and I'm always LGBTQ+ friendly. My preferred method for communications is Discord, and I normally use Foundry as a VTT. Thanks for giving me a look!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created via the Point Buy system presented in the Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition core rulebook, which will be provided. All characters will be baseline, at a level comparable to 'level 1', despite the system not having numbered levels. Characters will be created with the assistance of the GM before play begins on the first game day.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A decent microphone and a Discord and Roll20 account are required for this game; webcams will not be used. Other than that, just bring your imagination and a readiness to play, as all game materials will be provided!

What Dok brings to the table

I will bring all necessary rulebooks and supplements as well as a ready-made Foundry VTT game complete with battlemaps!

Homebrew rules

For the most part, I follow Call of Cthulhu's rules as written. However, an important distinction: Unless a player is doing something profoundly foolhardy (jumping on a grenade, standing in front of a moving car, etc.) I do not do one-hit kills. Player characters will always have at least a chance to survive injuries.

Safety

How Dok creates a safe table

Expect a game focused around narrative storytelling, a bit like a detective mystery. There will be a lot of investigation and digging up info and a lot of interaction with other party members as well as various NPCs with relatively little combat. The game can go anywhere from 4 to 8 hours if done as a one shot, so a split into two sessions is possible at no additional charge. Before play begins, I will collect lines and veils from players and edit the campaign as necessary to avoid crossing any of them. A single 10-15 minute break will be placed at a certain point in the game, with an option for additional breaks should the group desire it. I generally use the 'x card' system on Roll20 to give players a means to stop play, no questions asked, if something they are uncomfortable with comes up.
