About the adventure

A new kinda death takes root in the realm of Druskenvald as the shroud starts tearing souls apart to their very primordial essence, players for one reason or another all find themselves intertwined with the fate of this realm and those who created it. The Crooked Moon is a folklore horror campaign with a fair amount of comedic relief that can be toned up or down. The campaign is fit for new or veteran players that will bring your characters from level 1 aboard the Ghostlight Express all the way to level 13 where you will experience The Descent of The Crooked Moon as foretold in the crooked prophecy. The Campaign is broken into linear chapters with a centralized town for easy roleplay with the same core cast throughout the story. Players will have the opportunity to pick a faction and rally allies or create long lasting enemies that will influence the chapters to come.

About me

Heyo, long-time DM here, I've played d&d since I was a kid, and I've been DMing since 2020. I mainly run official Foundry VTT campaign modules with added content depending on player story choices. I've run campaigns as classic as Phandalin that have gotten so far off the rails they turn into war campaigns across the sword coast. I've also run campaigns such as Tomb of Annihilation which have had tighter travel restrictions and a ticking clock against annihilation. I'm currently running The Crooked Moon which is a folklore horror in a young isolated realm of death, however, I've had players learn pushing the limits of isolation can bring forth new foreign horrors. In summary I love story-writing and connecting lore if your at my table you can expect your character story to be a pivotal part of the campaign story - fate and legendary heros and all that fun stuff.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be done for free the week before your first session. All characters for this campaign start at level 1 unless the party has began the campaign then they are the average level of the party. I don't typically ban any source book for character creation but I will not purchase additional resources so you either need to provide a D&D Beyond character sheet for importing or use what's available on FoundryVTT. I'd recommend using The Crooked Moon Sourcebook for class and background selection as its the most optimized for this campaign both mechanically and role play wise.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To begin playing and creating your character you will need to join the Adventurers Guild Discord. Here you can have In-character and Out-of-Character discussions with your party as well as chat in a free commons area the guild offers for all adventure parties. The link for FoundryVTT will be provided to you in your corresponding party channels on discord.

What Roberto brings to the table

FoundryVTT has revolutionized TTrpgs and you can expect: soundtracks, animations, environmental combat, modifiers, and last but not least effects all automated for you. Having the rules as written is great for settling quick context or balancing misunderstandings however, I believe in the rule of cool so long as players are willing to take on a certain elements of risk to accomplish them.

Homebrew rules

-Combat Wise- Drinking potions yourself is a bonus action at my tables this encourages potion use and discovery. (Feeding a potion to a down ally is still a full action.) I also run some custom Injury systems where you can gain longer lasting injuries for going down more than once in the same fight. -Resource Wise- I allow stock piling inspirations but I do not allow burning multiple inspirations on the same action. I run two custom resources: Dread Tokens - which allow you to pass a roll with the bare minimum and no chance for critical Magic Mirrors - which allow you to respec your character without any catch. -Economy Wise- Shops are almost entirely automated with random pools and include bartering mechanics. This is done to respect player time so we aren't shopping all session. However, the DM reserves the right to repossess any item that reasonable shouldn't exist or be for sale. The player will receive 110% the cost of the item for their inconvenience or if no cost was set 110% the average rarity price.

Safety

How Roberto creates a safe table

Comfort and safety at the table always come first. The Crooked Moon deals with heavy themes: death, corruption, moral horror, mind control, and the occasional vampire or hellspawned nightmare. I take an active role in making sure nobody is caught off guard by content they didn't sign up for. Lines and Veils: Before Session 0, I'll send a Lines and Veils document covering the campaign's likely subject matter (corruption/possession, character death, body horror, loss of agency, and similar). You'll fill it out privately and it stays between us, I never share individual responses with the rest of the party. It isn't a one-and-done form either: if new content comes up later in the campaign that might brush against a limit, I'll check in again before running it. Session 0: We'll walk through the Lines and Veils results as a group (in aggregate, not attributed to anyone), talk through the tone and darker themes of Druskenvald so everyone's opting in with eyes open, and agree together on how the safety signal works in practice. In-session signals: Safety signals are handled digitally through Discord, a quick emoji reaction in the session channel lets you flag a scene without breaking immersion or putting you on the spot in voice chat. No one needs to explain themselves in the moment; I'll adjust or check in privately after. Aftercare: I generally try to land sessions on a downtime beat rather than cutting hard off a heavy scene, so there's room for that decompression to happen in-character rather than needing a big out-of-character debrief every time. That said, it varies if a scene hits harder than expected, I'll always make space to check in afterward, whether that's a quick word at the table or a DM later.
