About the adventure

Central City has its fair share of criminal activity, but even the most brazen crimelords have stuck to petty theft and illegal smuggling. Now though, the assassination of a Kozan ambassador threatens to turn a tenuous truce into a civil war. It's up to you, the party appointed by the lord of the Enforcers, to investigate the organized crime rings, solve the murder, and keep the peace. Perfect for brand new players, as well as beginner and intermediate skill levels. Roleplay heavy and combat lite, major focus on mystery and political intrigue. This is a single episode of a longer adventure, and can be launched into a full campaign if desired! Free session zero for character creation and table introductions, pre-session one also includes a brief customized personal adventure to serve as a tutorial and/or introduction to the setting.

About me

Hi, I'm ClassiNess, aka Classi, Ness, or PJ. I'm a self taught DM who's been playing TTRPGs since 2014 and worldbuilding for even longer. I'm most familiar with DnD 5e/5.5e, but I've also played Anime Campaign and GURPS. Other than TTRPGs, my hobbies include writing, video games, and streaming. I am happy to accommodate and provide a safe space for other LGBTQ+ members. I have an ongoing worldbuilding setting for my campaigns and writing called Tales From Illudia, featuring a setting that is a gradient from high fantasy to soft sci-fi, and many iterations in between. My writing follows an anthology story style, taking shorter form stories of various characters and settings within the world. r/TalesFromIlludia

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be made digitally, your choice of PDFs, DnD Beyond, Google Docs/Sheets, etc (I have digital forms available). Characters will be built during session zero, or before session one with one-on-one assistance if desired (more than happy to walk new players through the process!). Stats will use standard array (assign 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8). All official books are approved for use (5e and 5.5e), homebrew is allowed with specific approval (setting-specific homebrew is also available).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure to have a Discord account, a link will be provided to the Discord server.

What PJ brings to the table

Character voices for NPCs, combat will be present but fewer and further between with opportunity for rests in between most encounters. Appropriate (and sometimes custom!) music will be played over Discord via bot. Rules As Written except for homebrew and DM’s discretion. I am happy to assist new players in learning as we play, and appreciate assistance from experienced players in looking up rules and other information.

Homebrew rules

Character Creation The 5.5e Weapon Mastery feat may be used for martial classes, even if using a 5e character. Character homebrew is allowed, but please send me any materials you wish to add to your characters. I also have some of my own homebrew, ask me if you're curious of more setting-friendly homebrew! Just keep in mind any homebrew may be subject to adjustment for balance purposes as the game goes on. Milestone level ups (no XP) Combat Ammo and encumbrance are typically not tracked, unless under special circumstances (trying to move a particularly heavy burden, your weapons were confiscated, magic ammo, etc). Saving throws can be willingly failed if the affected creature chooses to fail. Critical hits do double damage dice. Critical fails on saving throws also do double damage dice. You may use an interaction with a free hand and a bonus action to use a potion during combat, however if you use a full action to drink a health potion you will receive the maximum amount of healing (10 HP instead of 2d4+2 for regular healing potions). Out of Combat Inspiration can be used to reroll hit dice (for level up health or healing on a long rest), or it may also be used for "DM Guidance", for a hint on what to do next. This will be re-flavored in-game as something like overhearing a rumor, receiving a message from your god, etc. Help giving advantage on skill checks is allowed, however the character taking the Help action must have proficiency in the skill being checked. Bastions will be available, if you have ideas for what you would like (individually and/or as a group), let me know- otherwise, there is a “default” bastion option that will be granted for free around level 5. Class-Specific Sorcerer Wild Magic Surges also trigger on a 20. If you roll a 20 for a Wild Magic Surge, you may roll twice on the Wild Magic table and choose which option you prefer.

A Lines and Veils document will be set up for the group, and can be updated anonymously or on a per-player basis. The document will be updated as-needed and reviewed as part of the session recap. In-game we will use the Red/Yellow/Green (or X/N/O) light system, which can be publicly posted/spoken, or directly messaged to me to be used anonymously as the GM.
