About the adventure

This is a story taking place in a world heavily inspired by the Xianxia (or Cultivation) genre and Wuxia stories. Your character, whoever they might be, was born in a shattered world, a series of vast floating islands connected by long hanging bridges. Within these islands, myriad methods of cultivation flourish. Some are publicly known, free for anyone to pursue. Most are jealously guarded secrets, known only to members of martial sects that seclude themselves away from the populace and master world-shaking arts that allow them to perform what can only be described as miracles. All of them pursue Ascension, the process of personal refinement by which one can grow their powers and, eventually, attain the strength to survive the trip to a new facet of reality, closer to the source of all things...and so do you. Your character has journeyed to the Imperial City of Falling Ashes seeking to further their growth, where multiple sects vie for dominance after the sudden collapse of the greatest power in the city, slain overnight to the last man. Do you plan to pick a side to join and claim all the rewards after they attain supremacy? Or is your plan to keep your head down and chase a promising lead to great strength while the sects battle in the streets? Who you play as is up to you. Maybe you're the only remaining prodigy of the slain clan that held Falling Ashes in its iron grip but a month ago, trying to survive in a city without allies as you hunt down your family and friends' killer, your memory of that fateful night blurred by the trauma of watching your whole world go up in flames all around you. Maybe you're a street urchin who's the pupil to a cantankerous old master thief, still skilled enough to steal someone's shadow, who's urging you to stay the hell out of the sect warfare going down in the city even as your own instincts tell you there will never be a better time to definitively escape your life of poverty. Maybe you're a naive newcomer, who came to the city to apprentice yourself to your kindly uncle, only to find out he's the leader of the local chapter of vigilante assassins, and he expects you to aid him in enforcing justice by eliminating the evildoers who seek to profit off a city in turmoil alongside him. Regardless of your origins, any potential hero shares a few things in common: your techniques may be rough, your skills not yet fully polished, but you're deeply talented, and if you survive your initial struggles, you may one day reshape the very world and shake the heavens. All you need to do to seize that potential...is survive and ascend.

About me

Hi! I'm a tabletop nerd from Argentina who's been playing RPGs since I was a little kid! I started GMing over a decade ago, and have played a wide variety of games and even done gamedev consultancy work in my time. I love creating stories and sharing them with others, and nothing makes me happier than when someone tosses in a twist of their own that I didn't see coming. Having finished several campaigns over the years, I'm hoping to find some new players with which to craft a story that they'll remember for years to come!

Character creation

Creating your character

This game will be played with a heavily customized version of 5e 2024, using a variety of handmade and homebrew resources For the homebrew details, refer to the segment below. For official materials, a brief summary follows: -All official books and licensed products are on the table, though material from the more tonally dissonant releases (Rick & Morty, Acquisitions Inc, for example) will have to be checked for tone-appropriateness just in case. -Unearthed Arcanas and homebrews are welcome, so long as they make sense for the character concept. Feel free to ask if there's something specific you want to play! -Starting level is 1. -Roll dice with a minimum point total (84 or higher). If desired, an equivalent point-buy value will be provided instead. Your hero is an exceptional promise. Their stats should reflect that!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The game will be played on discord, so I heartily recommend having an account ready. As well, we will use battlemaps where relevant, to ensure combat is easy to visualize and understand, via easily accessible options (no account required). We will be discussing your concept before play begins, so as to make sure the experience is customized to you and your protagonist. The most important thing you can do is have a clear idea of what you want to play — if you need more setting and world details, those will be provided, so don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have!

What Kanzaris brings to the table

Want a complex story? Fascinating characters to interact with that have their own lives and stories going on in parallel to yours? Death-defying challenges and plentiful opportunities to steal the show and carve a name for yourself? Then you've come to the right place. My GMing style prioritizes weaving a narrative where you, the player, are the star and get to make a difference. Even if you have humble beginnings, you'll get plenty of chances to stand out, and also to pursue your own personal goals. Want to woo a certain character that's caught your eye? You can. Thinking about forging yourself a merchant empire? Entirely possible. I take pride in designing interesting, unique challenges that are suited exactly to what you're trying to attempt, so as to make players work for their wins, and then ensuring they are sweet when they finally get them. In terms of how rules are handled, I have a strong handle on them, and believe in using them to enhance the story. When the rules make sense, we'll follow them strongly, letting them create new and interesting wrinkles in play. When they don't, we will deviate as needed. I'm not afraid of modifying how things work, but always fairly and with forewarning where applicable. Rules are meant to make things fun, after all. if they aren't fun, then we play in such a way that is and worry about the details later. As such, you can expect difficult challenges, but with ample rewards for creativity and flexible thinking. The more you channel your favorite movies, books and games, the happier I'll be, and the more leeway I'll grant.

Homebrew rules

-Your character begins play with extra HP, thus ensuring you have room to take some risks, as well as access to HP recovery techniques (or a helpful ally who can tend to you, as is appropriate). -In the event a martial class is selected, a subsystem that the player likes will be added to provide more options and flexibility. For example, Tactical_Hotpants' Martial Artes sytem. These will be discussed with the players in the event they are relevant. -Milestone-based advancement, rather than XP-based. -Allowing the acquisition of new, custom techniques and abilities via exploration and interaction with the world, to emphasize the themes.

Safety

How Kanzaris creates a safe table

For Session 0, we will go over expectations for the game, what is desired, and what players do and don't want to see, as well as expectations from the GM side of the screen. We will work to narrow down a tone and style for the game together, then strive to follow it once play begins. When it comes to X/N/O's,players will be able to utilize specific Discord reacts to express their need to interrupt play to discuss any issues they may have, and we will regularly check in across the week and at the end of every week to ensure things are proceeding smoothly, and in ways that are enjoyable. In the event anything is painful or traumatic, we will discuss what adjustments need to be made, then implement them quickly and smoothly to ensure everyone has a good time.
