About the adventure
The Aridanian desert has always been harsh and unforgiving, but since the empire began its recession, many violent groups have sprung up to make things even worse. Without the strong hand of the Aridanian military looming over the land, the people need local heroes to step up and defend them. That's where you come in. In this adventure, you can expect to rise up from lowly caravan guards, to investigators of tragedy, and ultimately to saviors of the broken denizens of this small stretch of the Great Empire of Aridan. Follow the trail of humanoid remains to its end, and ensure the last blood on these horrid cultists' hands is their own. Just be sure you're faster than the storm that's chasing you or you may lose the trail for good. Our 2-3 hour sessions will be punctuated with the ever-present threat of desert sandstorms. Take too long to complete your objectives in one of our 5-6 sessions and the storm may just catch up to you. Party members may be lost to the sands and new ones may appear in the confusion ((Players are welcome to join the going campaign organically if SPG shows seats are open)). Players can expect to level up at the end of each session, assuming significant progress towards their goal has been made. No prior D&D experience is required for this game. If players want or need help making a character or leveling them up, all they have to do is ask. Despite being open to players of all experience levels, combat encounters will be extra deadly, so tactical play is highly encouraged.

About me
Greetings adventurers! My name is LC, and I am an avid lover of board, video, and tabletop roleplaying games. My favorite aspect of being a Game Master is the same reason I got a Film degree and am writing my own book: I love a good story. Back in 2017, when I was first introduced to D&D, it was the unique storytelling potential of TTRPGs that hooked me in. The balance between a player's imagination, the mechanics of the game, and the roll of the dice is why I could never fudge a roll as a player or GM. I play fair because I believe it's this combination of factors conjoined with the personalities of players/characters that make these games perfect for lasting emotional investment, a powerful conduit for joy, and my ideal storytelling medium. Prior to joining StartPlaying, I was the Game Master of 2 weekly D&D campaigns and 1 monthly campaign. Each campaign was 2-3 years of incredible stories and fond memories shared by my players. In addition to those long-form games, over the past 7 years I've run more Oneshots than I can count in both 5.0e and 5.5e D&D. At this point, I know the core rules by heart, so I can focus on providing an enjoyable experience for everyone at the table without having to spend ages flipping through the rulebooks. My priority is to make sure everyone is having fun at the table, and we all walk away having had an experience to remember. So, whether you're a newbie, intermediate, or veteran of the world's greatest roleplaying game, I'm the DM for you.

Creating your character
Choose whether you would like to create your own character or play a pre-generated character. The 6 pregen options are on the Discord. Character Creation Rules: Use only the 5.5e Rules (2024+ content) Stat Generation: Point Buy Character Level: 6 Note: The only 2024+ content I own on D&D Beyond is the PHB, so Forge of the Artificer, Heroes of the Forgotten Realms, etc. will not be available options unless you supply them for yourselves.

Preparing for the session
Links: Join my StartPlaying Discord and D&D Beyond Campaign via the link included on your confirmation page after signing up. VTT: Download Talespire Guest Edition (free) or use Talespire (paid) if you already have it. The software(s) can be found on Steam. I have purchased 6 seats so you can use the software for free if you don't already own it. Mental Prep: Be prepared for 2-3 hours of consecutive tabletop gaming which may include anything listed in this game's content warnings.

How Leony (LC) creates a safe table
This campaign will feature vivid descriptions of gore and fantasy cult activities, including sacrifices and cannibalism. These are enemy NPC acts, and players will not have to partake in any such activities, but if you are easily disturbed by such content, then this may not be the campaign for you. There is a Lines and Veils channel in the Discord. Put anything you feel is important to mention into there BEFORE we begin the game. DURING the game, you may type "X Card" in the chat to use an X Card. AFTER the game, feel free to private-message me to talk with me about anything you had an issue with during the session. We will also use Stars & Wishes after sessions to customize the game to returning players' preferred styles moving forward.
