About the adventure

Welcome to Barovia. Death is not the end, but coming back will cost you something. The mists of Barovia have swallowed countless travelers. Ancient forests hide forgotten graves, isolated villages struggle beneath an endless gray sky, and high above the valley stands Castle Ravenloft, where Count Strahd von Zarovich watches his newest guests with patient amusement. This is my take on Curse of Strahd, focused on gothic horror, exploration, character development, difficult decisions, and a world that reacts to what the party does. Death Has a Price Death works differently in this Barovia. When your character dies, they may be offered a way back, but resurrection requires a sacrifice. To return, your character must surrender one of their memories. Maybe you forget the face of someone you loved. The reason you became an adventurer. A childhood friend. Your greatest triumph. The person you failed to save. You return to life, but that memory is gone. The question is no longer just whether you can survive Barovia. How much of yourself are you willing to lose to escape it? Who Is This Game For? New players and experienced D&D veterans are both welcome at my table. If this is your first campaign, I am happy to help with character creation, rules, and learning the game as we play. If you have years of experience, or have played Curse of Strahd before, you are welcome too. I intend to preserve the heart of the adventure while introducing enough changes, surprises, and character-focused elements to keep Barovia unpredictable. This game is especially suited for players who enjoy roleplay, investigation, exploration, horror, moral dilemmas, and meaningful character choices. You do not need an optimized character. Interesting flaws, fears, relationships, ambitions, and personal history give us far more to work with. How I Run Games I prefer worlds that react to the players rather than stories that force them down a predetermined path. Your decisions matter. NPCs remember what you do, circumstances change, and consequences may not become apparent until much later. I encourage creativity, investigation, unusual solutions, and character-driven choices. Horror comes primarily through **atmosphere, mystery, tension, and implication**, balanced with combat, exploration, quiet character moments, and the occasional bit of humor. Most importantly, this is your party's story. Strahd may believe everyone in Barovia exists for his amusement. Let's see if you can prove him wrong.

About me

I’ve been running tabletop RPGs for more than 20 years, and the thing I still love most about being a Game Master is watching a group of players take a world I’ve prepared and turn it into something I never could have predicted on my own. My games focus heavily on immersive worlds, memorable NPCs, meaningful choices, and player agency. I put a lot of work into preparation but I never expect players to follow a predetermined script. Your decisions matter, your characters help shape the story, and I’m always ready to adapt when the party decides the obvious road is far less interesting than the suspicious trail disappearing into the woods. I’m especially drawn to games with strong atmosphere and settings that reward exploration and investigation. I enjoy everything from post-apocalyptic wastelands and psychological horror to fantasy adventures, mysteries, and campaigns where the players slowly uncover something much larger than they initially realized. At my table, I aim for a balance of roleplay, exploration, tactical encounters, humor, tension, and collaborative storytelling. New players are absolutely welcome. I’m happy to teach rules as we play, answer questions, and help you build a character that feels like part of the world rather than simply a collection of statistics.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create character together in a session 0 setting. I prefer that stats be rolled 4d6 drop the lowest, with anything below 10 being rerolled. However you are welcome to keep low rolls as well. Standard Array is also acceptable.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A discord account is needed. I will provide the foundryvtt website during session 0

What SnotlingVT brings to the table

My games are not built around forcing players down a predetermined path. I present the world, its people, and its dangers, then let the party decide how they want to engage with them. NPCs will remember your actions, factions may react to your choices, and decisions can have consequences that appear much later. Combat will be dangerous and meaningful without being designed simply to kill characters. Enemies will act according to their intelligence, instincts, and goals. Some fights can be avoided, negotiated around, or approached creatively. I generally use the Rules as Written as the foundation, but I am happy to embrace the Rule of Cool when a creative idea makes sense within the scene. I would rather work with a player to make an interesting idea possible than shut it down because the rules do not cover it perfectly. Roleplay, investigation, exploration, and combat all have a place at my table. I also encourage humor and lighter character moments. Horror works best when there is something worth protecting between the frightening parts. Most importantly, I want players to feel that their characters belong in the story. Your backgrounds, relationships, fears, goals, and even the memories you may sacrifice to survive Barovia can become part of the campaign.

Homebrew rules

Encumbrance, ammo and most spell components I don't track because I find it more bookkeeping than game play. Death in this campaign is obviously handled differently and given more to player choice.

How SnotlingVT creates a safe table

We will go over lines and veils in session 0, happy to do so in private as well if that is more comfortable for my players.
