About the adventure

This campaign is beginner friendly, following the Dragon Heist adventure module from levels 1-5. Players will face some of Waterdeep's most iconic villains as the player's and the city's factions race to track down a lost hoard of stolen treasure that's hidden somewhere in the city! This adventure also gives the players the opportunity to run a tavern in the background with the help of a friendly, ghost butler. If you're new to D&D and love urban fantasy and mystery, this game is for you! I love incorporating player backstories, so I will modify the campaign as we go to fit the interests of the players and the needs of their characters. I'm also a rule of cool kind of DM. If something makes sense and makes the story more interesting, we'll probably be bending the rules to make it happen.

About me

The best games come from collaboration and trust, so I make my games exactly that kind of space. I have been a game master for 10 years, running dozens of long-term 5e DnD campaigns and learning a range of other systems along the way: Pathfinder, Powered by The Apacolypse (Avatar, Homebrewed games), and Marvel Multiverse RPG. As a life-long lover of films, tv, and comics of many genres, I'm highly flexible with the tone and settings of my games, and I love creating a bespoke experience for players through custom character options, items, and homebrew rules. TTRPG's are such a unique and engaging way to get creative with your community, so it's more than just a game to me -- it's a life mission! I'd love to have you in my game, and I can't wait to play the stories we will create together! I am a festival-winning filmmaker, who's passionate about community and education. My current day job is as an after school teacher, and my goals are to teach people about film, language arts, and tabletop roleplaying games.

Character creation

Creating your character

PLEASE DEFAULT TO 2024 5e RULES, unless you are comfortable mixing it with the 2014 rules and are willing to put up with any technical difficulties resulting from version mixing. If you're not sure, just stick with the 2024, non-legacy rules. Players should make level 1 characters on DnD Beyond using the standard array option for stats. Accommodations can be made for not using DnD Beyond upon request. We will be weaving together character backstories during the first session to make sense of how and why the PCs are travelling together at the start of the campaign, so please be flexible and leave room for other players to be a part of your story when coming up with your character concept.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will play over Discord so please have it downloaded and up to date. I will message you to exchange Discord details once you sign up for the game.

What Spencer brings to the table

There will be music and I do character voices, but no pressure to do one for your character. I will use Owlbear Rodeo as a visual aid for combat and exploration. I use VoiceMod as a soundboard and voice modifier.

How Spencer creates a safe table

SAFETY SURVEY: I will send you an anonymous safety survey before and after the session. BREAKS: I will check-in occasionally to see if anyone wants a break and anyone can propose a break at any time. LUXTON TECHNIQUE: If you're comfortable speaking up when something bothers you, please do and I will accommodate whatever changes you need to feel safe at the table. OPEN DOOR: You can always leave a game without judgement if something is bothering you. I will gently check in with you after you leave and again after the session. DEBRIEF/AFTERCARE: We will debrief after the game and I am happy to stay on with anyone who would like to discuss aftercare.
