About the adventure
We will be using the new Journey to Horizon campaign frame. You will take on the role of a new adventurer tasked with assisting in gathering 10 magical shards across a varied continent, then reassembling them to bring magic and safety back to this broken land. The Hook: Long ago, the vast continent of Valloren was home to wondrous landscapes shaped by the goddess Aurelia, wielder of the elemental essence called terrana. But when her disciples’ betrayal threatened to extinguish magic forever, Aurelia sacrificed her own life to call down the stars and purge the land of corruption. To protect her people from annihilation, Aurelia raised magical barriers around her sanctuaries that would last a thousand years. In a Journey to Horizon campaign, you play heroes chosen by fate to leave their recently unsealed sanctuary and travel across a turbulent and hostile world on a quest to resurrect the goddess. This is a high fantasy hex crawl adventure. It will take you through incredibly varied landscapes as the magic of terrana has forged a world where snow covered plains are pressed up against verdant jungles and scorching deserts. A fun combination of Legend of Zelda, The Dragon Prince, and Fallout, this campaign frame is perfect for any experience level to come and play in the Daggerheart world. Now onward to the Horizon!

About me
I had the joy of being introduced to Dungeons & Dragons at age 14 while working my first job as an assistant in a comic bookstore. What was already a dream job for a young fanatic of nerd-dom became even better when a few of the other employees invited me to join their 2nd Edition campaign. I’ve been a fan of tabletop gaming ever since. Over the years, I’ve spent much of my time running long-term (longest being 6 years) campaigns for different groups of friends. While I have the most experience with Dungeons & Dragons, I’ve also had the pleasure of playing and running games in Pathfinder, Starfinder, Blades in the Dark, MASKS, Vampire: The Masquerade, and most recently Daggerheart. As a Game Master, my focus is on fostering a welcoming environment for collaborative gameplay and storytelling, led by the players and guided by the roll of the dice. I enjoy using the rules as written as a foundation while treating them as tools to help build the framework of an engaging adventure. With a strong understanding of different rules systems, I aim to guide players as they discover their preferred playstyle and help the group create a memorable shared experience. I’m excited about the opportunity to meet new players, no matter their experience level or background, and to start new adventures with people from all over the globe.

Creating your character
We will go through the character creation process together in our session zero. We will be using the Demiplane campaign tool to share all of my materials. Daggerheart greatly encourages players to make their party together. Homebrew items and domain cards will need to be shown to the DM first, but as long as they are balanced they will meet approval. Daggerheart also includes sections about connections with your fellow players. We will go through those connection questions, as well as any other questions the group may have, during our first session. The starting area for our adventure has been isolated for centuries if not millennia, so a few character options don't make sense. The rogue Syndicate subclass is based on knowing people in different settlements, so that would not work here. Wanderborne as a background presents the same problem, and will not work. Warborne is possible, but as the war would have to have happened in your community, it would have to be agreed upon by the whole table. Besides that, all classes and void test materials are available!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Your first step will be to join our Discord server Kemp's Campfire. https://discord.gg/4Euvs4WJh Upon joining I will send you a lines and veils document you will need to fill out before playing in the campaign. You will also need to read the server rules. If I feel any of the rules have been broken it may result in your banning from the game and the server. Once you have joined, I will make sure you have the right channel permissions, and I will add you to the Demiplane and Roll 20 campaigns. You will need an account with Discord, Roll20, and Demiplane to play.
What James brings to the table
My GM style focuses on collaborative storytelling and player-driven adventures. I use the rules as a strong foundation, but treat them as tools that support creativity and fun at the table. I enjoy helping players find their preferred playstyle while building a welcoming and engaging environment for both new and experienced gamers. My goal is always to create memorable stories together, guided by character choices and the roll of the dice. I will be running all combats through the Roll20 VTT. I will make sure to add music and ambiance to tactical combat and puzzle solving. I do voices for a lot of major NPCs, but I don't do them very well. It's quite fun for me to try and make every NPC distinct. I am more often to stick to Rules as Written, but will always listen to my players if they want to change something.

How James creates a safe table
My goal as a Game Master is to create a table where every player feels welcome, respected, and comfortable participating in the story we create together. Tabletop roleplaying games are at their best when everyone feels safe to contribute, take creative risks, and enjoy the experience. TTRPG's are meant for everyone, and I strive to make sure my table reflects that spirit. Before the campaign begins, players will receive a Lines and Veils document. This allows everyone to privately indicate topics they do not want to appear in the game at all (Lines) and topics that may exist but should fade to black or stay off-screen (Veils). This helps us establish shared boundaries before play begins. During the game, we will use the X / N / O safety system: X – Stop the current content immediately. N – Move past or change the current scene. O – Everything is okay; the scene can continue. Players can communicate these signals either through Discord chat or through in-game messaging, whichever feels easiest and most comfortable in the moment. No explanation is required when using these tools. Respect for fellow players is essential. Discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated, including behavior directed at another player based on gender, race, sexual orientation, identity, or background. Everyone deserves to feel welcome at the table. Additional practices I encourage to help keep the table comfortable and enjoyable include: Open communication: Players are always welcome to message me privately if something at the table makes them uncomfortable. Breaks when needed: Anyone may request a short pause or break during play. Collaborative storytelling: Player input is valued, and feedback is always welcome. Respecting spotlight time: Everyone deserves moments for their character to shine. After-session check-ins: I’m happy to hear thoughts after a session so we can continue improving the experience together. The goal is simple: a fun, respectful, and collaborative game where everyone can enjoy the adventure together.
