About the adventure

Black Clover: The Devil is in the Details Welcome to an alternate vision of the Clover Kingdom, a world where a person's worth is entirely dictated by their magical prowess and the pages of their grimoire. For generations, the Magic Knights have stood as the shining protectors of the realm, revered by commoners and nobles alike. But the glittering capital is hiding a dark truth. Magic Knights are secretly rotting the Clover Kingdom from within, trading their oaths for forbidden magic and demonic pacts. In this campaign, you play as a squad of rookie Magic Knights who have just earned their robes. Instead of simply hunting bandits and defending the borders, you will find yourselves tangled in a deadly web of high-society corruption. With traitorous superiors and corrupt nobles pulling the strings, you’ll have to rely on your squadmates and your wits to survive. As rookie Magic Knights tasked with uncovering this corruption, you will quickly learn that in the pursuit of absolute power, the devil is always in the details. This game is built for players who love high-octane shonen anime action mixed with tense, investigative roleplay. Expect a campaign that balances dynamic, creative magical combat with dark fantasy mysteries. We will be focusing heavily on developing your character's unique magical attribute, expanding your grimoire, and working as a team to take down corrupt elites. Whether you are a mana-blessed royal or a scrappy peasant with an unusual spellbook, your choices will determine the fate of the kingdom.

Character creation

Creating your character

Welcome to the Clover Kingdom! To get everyone ready for our campaign, character creation will be split into two parts: prep work done before we meet, and an in-character event during our first session. Part 1: Before Session Zero/One Before we sit down to play, you will need to determine your base character, stats, and innate magic. Rolling Stats: We will be rolling for our core stats using the Avrae bot in our Discord server. (Please make sure all rolls are done in the designated rolling channel so I can review them!) Discovering Your Magic: In the world of Black Clover, your magic attribute is tied to your soul and lineage. You will roll to determine your base Magic Attribute (e.g., Fire, Water, Ash, Glass, etc.) before the first session. This allows you to write your backstory around how your character grew up using their unique magical talent. Backstory & Origins: Decide where you come from—are you a noble from the Royal Capital, a commoner from a border town, or a peasant from the Forsaken Realm? Part 2: During Session One (The Grimoire Ceremony) The Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony: In the Black Clover universe, a mage's true potential is unlocked when they receive their grimoire at age 15. We will be roleplaying this ceremony during our first session! Rolling for Your Grimoire: When your character's name is called at the ceremony, you will roll live at the table to discover the nature of your grimoire. This roll will determine how many leaves your clover has, its physical appearance, and what unique spells or abilities you start with.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before we officially begin our journey into the Clover Kingdom, please complete the following steps to ensure we have a smooth Session Zero and Session One! Join the Discord Server: All voice communication, out-of-character chat, and Avrae dice rolling will happen here. Make sure your microphone is working and your settings are configured. Link Your Character to Avrae: Since we are rolling stats and handling magic through Discord, you will need to link your digital character sheet to the Avrae bot. Create a Virtual Tabletop Account: We will be using a Virtual Tabletop for our combat encounters and map exploration. Please create a free account and join the campaign link provided in the server. Review the Campaign Primer: Read through the campaign hook and character creation rules posted in the announcements channel to familiarize yourself with this alternate universe. Brainstorm Your Background: Have a rough idea of your character's origins—whether you are a noble from the Capital or a peasant from the Forsaken Realm—before we begin rolling for stats and magic.

What Kaito Shiaba brings to the table

A Living, Breathing World: I use curated ambient music and epic battle soundtracks to bring the grand, magical atmosphere of our universe to life. You can also expect distinct character voices and vibrant personalities for the NPCs you meet—from snooty royals to eccentric Magic Knight Captains. Dynamic, Tactical Combat: Magic isn't just about throwing raw power at a problem; it's about strategy, teamwork, and exploiting your environment. Combat will be intense and tactical, requiring you to think creatively and synergize your unique spells with your squadmates to overcome powerful foes. The Rule of Cool: While we use our core system's rules to keep the game fair and grounded, this is ultimately a high-octane shonen universe. If you have a highly creative, cinematic idea for a spell combination or a dramatic finishing blow, I will lean heavily into the Rule of Cool. Epic narrative moments and creative problem-solving will always be rewarded. Deep Character Integration: I will actively weave your character's backstory, innate magic attribute, and grimoire discoveries into the main plot. Your personal secrets and choices will directly impact the overarching mystery of the corrupted Magic Knights.

Homebrew rules

Quality of Life Adjustments Bonus Action Potions: Drinking a healing potion yourself costs a Bonus Action. Administering a potion to an unconscious squadmate requires a full Action. Brutal Criticals: When you score a critical hit, you do not roll the dice twice. Instead, you take the maximum possible damage of the first die, and then roll the second die. This ensures a critical hit always feels like a devastating strike! Secret Death Saves: To heighten the tension, players will roll their death saving throws privately to the DM. Your squadmates won't know exactly how close to death you are, meaning they have to act fast! Black Clover Specific Rules Pushing Past Your Limits: In true Magic Knight fashion, when your character is reduced to a quarter of their maximum HP or lower, you can choose to "Surpass Your Limits." This grants you advantage on your next attack or spellcasting roll, but you will suffer a level of exhaustion once the adrenaline fades after combat. Union Magic (Combo Spells): If you and a squadmate hold your turns to act simultaneously, you can attempt to combine your magical attributes into a single, devastating Union Spell. The DM will set a DC for this attempt based on how naturally your elements synergize. Grimoire Evolution: While you gain spells normally as you level up, your grimoire is a living reflection of your soul. During moments of extreme emotional stress or life-or-death situations, the DM may allow you to roll to spontaneously unlock a brand-new spell to turn the tides of battle.

Safety

How Kaito Shiaba creates a safe table

While the Clover Kingdom we are exploring is filled with dark mysteries, sinister plots, and intense combat, our actual gaming table must remain a safe, respectful, and comfortable space for everyone. To ensure we can all enjoy the darker themes of the narrative without crossing personal boundaries, we will be utilizing the following safety tools: Session Zero: Before the campaign officially begins, we will have a dedicated Session Zero to discuss the tone of the game, establish group expectations, and ensure everyone is on the same page regarding the campaign's mature themes. Lines and Veils: I will provide an anonymous digital form before Session Zero where you can list your "Lines" (topics that will absolutely not appear in the game) and "Veils" (topics that might exist in the world but will "fade to black" and not be described in detail). Digital X, N, & O System: Because we are playing online, we will use a digital version of the X-Card system. X (Stop): Type an 'X' in the designated Discord text channel, or DM me directly, to immediately pause and skip past the current content without question. N (Pause/Pivot): Type an 'N' if you are feeling uncomfortable and need the scene to de-escalate or pivot away from its current trajectory. O (Continue): Type an 'O' when I check in to signal that you are comfortable and ready to proceed. Post-Session Debriefing (Aftercare): After particularly intense, emotional, or high-stakes sessions, we will leave 10 to 15 minutes at the end of our playtime to step out of character, decompress, and chat about how everyone is feeling.
