About the adventure

Take a journey with me into the mists of the past; not the past that was, but the past that might have been, one that lived in the hearts and dreams of our ancient ancestors, when the world was vast and frightening. Imagine a kingdom in desolation, its past hopes for prosperity and peace now teetering on the brink of chaos. The splendor of the past is only half-remembered. Who can reclaim it? You will create heroes in the mold of the Welsh mythic tradition, and set them off on a long unfolding journey through strange realms, to reclaim the Sacred Treasures which can unite the realm and restore the faded glories of the past. You and your companions will decide in what order to seek the Sacred Treasures, and chart a course through the wilds to find them. You will face many obstacles, some of them governed by a certain sense of dream-logic. Fearsome battles will you face, and not all who set off upon this quest will return. The game will be a semi-linear experience, with branching pathways through the wilderness, each with their own particular encounters and challenges. Characters can die, though overall lethality is moderate. Expect challenging combat with tricky tactical scenarios, but which can be overcome with careful planning and quick thinking. Expect a tone and narrative style more akin to folktales than modern fantasy.

About me

I've been running tabletop roleplaying games, in professional and personal capacities, for nearly twelve years now. I cut my teeth with Dungeons & Dragons, but quickly expanded into a wider variety of games, though my core preference has always been for games of heroic fantasy. I love bringing the feel of pulp adventure stories to life, infused with ideas and motifs drawn from history, mythology, and classic literature, of which I have an abiding love. My games are all about presenting problems for players to solve with their own creativity and wits, whether those problems be social, tactical, or philosophical.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be a group process undertaken during our Session 0. I generally ask players to roll for their starting ability scores with the group.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To prepare, you will need to join the Roll20 game (this will involve making a Roll20 account if you do not have one). I also encourage you, before Session 0, to read the handout entitled 'The Fall of Ynyr' to get a sense of the campaign background, as well as the handout for class restrictions.

What Sean Mullins brings to the table

The game will include tactical maps for combat as well as a larger hex map for tracking your journeys. Upon player request, I will also make a custom token for use on battle maps. I tend to take a very open-ended, neutral attitude towards running the game; I try my best to be an impartial arbiter of any action that you may attempt, and to err on the side of having plausible ideas work.

Homebrew rules

This game will involve limitations on player races and classes to match the Welsh mythological inspiration. Characters must be human. Permitted classes will be Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, & Rogue. I use no other major deviations from the Core Rules. I am generally open to the use of additional, official sourcebooks beyond the Players' Handbook, and will decide about allowing content from them on a case-by-case basis.
