About the adventure

I will run this module as Mission: Impossible (the TV show, not the movies) meets Ocean's Eleven. Almost certainly, it will end up as A-Team meets Rick and Morty, but that's okay too. This is a light-hearted module that rewards creative problem solving over violence. Though sometimes brute force is the only way to solve a problem. The problems you will be asked to solve are generally not those that can't be fully solved through legal means. Still, the Golden Vault would prefer that you do not kill anyone unless necessary, and that you don't die yourself. (The insurance rates will go up if we lose too many operatives.) Above all, DON'T GET ARRESTED! If we are forced to break you out of jail for a failed mission, you will forfeit your fee. The same goes for binging you back from the dead; diamonds (and resurrections in general) are not cheap. The thirteen missions available include several heists, rescues, and the occasional prison break. This module will not use the "rule of cool," but I will reward creative problem solving wherever it arises. PvP is not allowed without consent from both players (this may be a solution at times). Characters can usually be resurrected for the next event. I will attempt to weave backgrounds for your characters into the world, but I also invite you to bring a new character to each session if you choose.

About me

I like to run story-driven games with a good balance of combat and roleplay as appropriate for the system. Like so many, I started playing TTRPGs during COVID. In that time, I have run and played dozens of campaigns and one-shot adventures. Dungeons and Dragons was my first, but I am especially fond of Call of Cthulhu. My many hobbies include game design (board games and TTRPG content), and writing. I am a veteran who enjoys creative, tactical combat in D&D, and I am a history buff who enjoys historical accuracy in Call of Cthulhu. I am happy to play with either experienced or new players. As long as everyone is having fun, nothing is off the table.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players should build a character prior to the game on DnD Beyond or Discord. Use Point Buy or Standard Distribution for scores. Players may also use a pre-generated character if they so choose.

The current party

This module usually runs best if you choose support spells and classes, but there is still room for more martial classes.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

This game uses the Roll20 VTT for maps, handouts, and rolls. You may build a character on Roll20 (or use a free one) or use DnD Beyond. If you choose DnD Beyond, download and install the Beyond20 add-in for your browser to allow rolls to happen automatically. Due to bandwidth issues, we will run voice over Discord. Cameras are not required. (This also serves as a backup for anyone having issues with Roll20.) Use this link to joining the HammerQuest Games Discord. Most channels are hidden, so introduce yourself and say what game you are there to attend. https://discord.gg/zF6yV9hFMZ

What Oren brings to the table

I am a huge fan of handouts: images to present to the players to enhance immersion. Also, I prefer to call you by you character name rather than your real name. I will use the gender/pronoun provided for your character during the game. I only use real names or handles if there is a complication. I use sound effects and ambient music. I run these through Roll20 while we run Voice on Discord. This allows you to mute the ambient music if you choose and still play. I encourage roleplay between players, and I make a point to make sure everyone has a turn. I'll attempt voices, but it's not a skill of mine. Don't be surprised if all the characters sound like a middle-aged man. As we play, I like to ask players to provide sensory details to the world where possible. If you can't think of anything, I am happy to provide them for you.

Homebrew rules

I will use a mix of 2014 and 2024 rules. -Using a potion on yourself is a bonus action, or an action on another person. -Everyone starts with Heroic Inspiration each session, which can be spent after rolling any die to re-roll any one die. This includes damage dice. -I don't expect character death in this module, but death saves reset after a long rest. -Surprise works by giving you advantage on initiative or the enemy disadvantage on initiative, not by giving a free action. -I am a fan of success at a cost and bargains with players. -I may not always tell you if a roll is a success or failure. You may receive bad information on a failed roll and not be sure. -"I heard a rumor": Characters stuck? You can use the phrase "I heard a rumor" and add a detail to the game. I will do my best to make that truth. Please limit this to once per session.

Safety

How Oren creates a safe table

I will send a google form to everyone before session 1 with your lines and veils. Alternatively, you can message me directly in Discord ahead of the game if you have specific lines and veils. I use X,N,O via whisper message in Roll20. We will discuss this during the game each session if we have new players to ensure you know the interface. (X means we have reached a line or you need the game to stop; N means you are uncomfortable with the direction of the game and need me to change direction; O means you are okay continuing the game.) Players may also message me directly in Discord or say "I need a short break." I will pause and speak to you privately to address your concerns. After the game, I always invite Stars and Wishes. This is a safety tool, but I also like it to improve the game for the next session. You may choose to fill this out or ignore it as you feel appropriate.
