About the adventure
Our sad bunch of misfits find themselves cursed… cursed and trapped in the land of Barovia. Not an ounce of happiness or hope anywhere to be found, the people cry out in drunken dispare. A house full of horrors and shrouded in mystery may be the only solution to finding your way back home, and maybe some treasures along the way. Do you dare enter? Can you beat this house of death? Shadowdark is great for both new players and veteran players of OSR and West Marches campaigns. In this game, Players explore a mysterious house to find gold, treasure and monsters. You will uncover the mystery of what happened, why, and how to escape this land of Barovia. This game is meant as a 2 to 3 shot with a focus on role playing, creative play, and simplistic rules following the Shadowdark rule set. Shadowdark follows the rule of KISS - Keep it Super Simple! Because of this, games are fast, punchy, and dangerous. Players will want to come prepared with four level one Shadowdark characters as the game can be deadly, but not unbeatable, with rewards for clever gameplay.

About me
Hey, I am Blake, I love Spending time with family, friends, gaming and going on walks with my Border Collie Pippin (Yes from the Lord of the Rings). I began playing dungeons and dragons 3.5 edition when I was 10 years old, and have been playing on again/off again ever since with me becoming a dedicated weekly player in 2012. I would say that I have spend a long time playing pathfinder, dungeons and dragons 3.5, Savage World Adventure edition, dungeons and dragons 5/ and 5.5. I began DMing in 2021 with Savage worlds and then DND 5th edition. I am beginning to have practice DM’ing Pathfinder 2e and Shadowdark. In addition, this past year, I began crafting my own TTRPG materials for my Live games. I have about 3 ongoing games, and I just can’t get enough. Outside of dungeons and dragons I love to find ways to connect and learn for my games. I recently went to Amsterdam and all I wanted to do use the various aspects of the past to enhance my games.

It’s a free character generator that is super simple and fast. Depending on time, I will discuss character creation through Shadowdarklings. I can help make Characters during the Session Zero. What blake lawhorn brings to the table
Decisions matter in my games. Nothing is worse then the players making a decision, and the game master's focus is on his story, so much that he undermines YOU! As a player, know that your decisions, and creativity will have positive, or negative change in your survival and the world around you. With this freedom, I am able to allow you to thrive and grow in the world, and have a player focused story. During this one shot, I encourage creativity, and tactics, as well as problem solving. As this is a shorter game and not a full fledged campaign, the expanse of the world and story is limited. In my longer games, I am able to build the story around you the players. I think this can be best exemplified in two scenarios: 1. During a 6 month campaign of Storm King's Thunder, A player was interested in a magical ring and became focused on getting it. Because of that, I was able to combine Tomb of Annihilation, another 5e Dungeons and Dragons module, with the current story to allow the players to make choices and achieve THEIR goals. 2. During a game of Savage Worlds, the players were exploring a haunted frozen wasteland, and a “Flying Sword” a common monster, attacked the players. A player, attempted to reach out, grab, and hold the sword in his hand. I chose the rule of cool, and rewarded the player with a ghostly scimitar with certain ghostly properties. I was able to turn a combat encounter into story and a wonderful character moment that he remembers to this day.
Homebrew rules
Shadowdark is a rules light system that is great for OSR enthusiasts, new players, and those who enjoy high tension games. Specific home brew is not needed due to the nature of the system. However, players are encouraged to come up with creative solutions that are not in the book. As Game Master there will be times where I will need to make a call, when those happen, I try to make sure they are always made with the interest of keeping the game fun and moving along.

How blake lawhorn creates a safe table
We will be scheduling a 30 minute Session Zero prior to beginning the adventure. During the session zero, we will be discussing the safety principles. X's N’s, and O’s will be digital and messaged through private chat. This will allow for members to feel comfortable letting me know about the concern, so I can move on, or avoid the material going forward. In addition, as will be discussed during the session zero, I will provide a Google Doc link for participants to be able to edit their Lines and Veils. Please note that the content warnings below will also be discussed.
