About the adventure

Dominaria is a plane filled with magic and technological artifacts left over from bygone civilizations. In this one shot your characters will explore one such marvel, a town built underneath a massive construct. Explore the town, go on an important quest, fight or negotiate your way through encounters, and discover the secrets of the Shadewalker. This game uses the newly updated rules for the cypher system by Monte Cook Games. It is an easy to learn system where players control their own fate (the GM never rolls a die) and narrative roleplay is encouraged over crunchy tactical combat. For fans of the Cypher System, this will be a fun introduction to the new update. It has a new wound system that replaces stat pool damage (though some attacks still damage pools like poison). There's some other changes and tweaks here and there that speed up play. But much of the core of the game has stayed the same. I'm really excited to run it. You do not need any books or knowledge to play this one shot. We will be using pre generated characters provided by MCGs one shot who are built to work well with the adventure. I will go over how to play and have a brief conversation about table safety and my table expectations. I've been running games in various systems for over a decade at this point and I'm stoked to try this one out. Come explore a world rich in lore, solve problems, survive, and fight (if necessary).

About me

Hi! I'm Ben (a.k.a. EdwinFelspar) By day, I'm a high school teacher specializing in game design electives. By night, I'm a long-time GM with a deep love for storytelling, worldbuilding, and collaborative chaos. After over a decade in the TTRPG space — mostly running D&D 5e — I've decided to bring my games to StartPlaying to challenge myself, meet new players, and help fund the hobby I love. Let’s tell unforgettable stories together.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players will pick from a selection of pre generated characters designed by MCG specifically for this one shot. I know many folk want to bring their OCs to games. For various reasons I am not allowing this. If you want access to the pregens before the game starts so you have an idea of the options that is fine.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You need discord and access to a web browser (we'll probably be using owlbear rodeo as our VTT).

What Ben brings to the table

I provide a private discord server with a bot that plays mood music and ambiance. We'll use Owlbear rodeo as our VTT, it is free no account required (to my knowledge). Cameras are optional, we'll use them only if everyone consents.

Homebrew rules

No homebrew. But I may make calls that contradict the rules as written in order to speed up play and make the game more fun.

How Ben creates a safe table

I have a page of table rules I go over and will use the deck of player safety to quickly cover topics that may come up.
