About the adventure
January 1999, Chicago IL. As you shelter inside of the Broadway Armory center, a radio crackles to life to relay a message. Sent by "The Collective", it claims that only those whose minds are open and ready to receive the words can hear it, and it simply says one thing.. "Find us in South Haven, save our souls." Set in the American Midwest during 1999, "Flytrap" is a game focused on a group of mages (you!) brought together by a natural disaster and an unusual set of circumstances. You play as a fresh mage, unproven and untested, hailing from or otherwise currently stuck in Chicago, Illinois during a historic blizzard. You may have friends in the emergency shelter, or are a complete stranger brought here by fate alone. Your goal, at least at first, is to get to South Haven in Michigan and rescue a handful of survivors who are like you, and might be able to tell you what you are, and who you need to be. This game uses Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary edition, a somewhat complex system to wrap your head around initially. Understanding how Mage's magic system works, in addition to World of Darkness itself is a tricky thing to do, but this game is built with beginners in mind! I'll be available to contact for any questions, and I'll be presenting a brief rundown of the basics during our Session 0! Combat will not be the focus and is somewhat simplified, World of Darkness is a social focused game so there won't be tons of tactical combat during this game, prepare for a spoonful of Rule of Cool as well! This story is focused largely on a small stakes, personal story that's not dependent on WoD lore at large, you won't need to be familiar with Mage's Traditions or the various other supernaturals in this world.

About me
Hello! My name is Sushi, and I love tabletop games. I generally prefer non-fantasy, but I've GM'd lots of systems ranging from old westerns to modern settings, sci-fi and fantasy! I focus on stories and roleplay instead of tactical combat, but there's still a sprinkling of that depending on the system and vibes of the group. I generally prefer to run short and medium length games, ranging from 3-20 sessions, ideally run each week. I can and have run longer games before however! I've been running my own games since 2021 with all kinds of people ranging from friends and family to total strangers. I've gone through a lot of systems and I've become very used to teaching people how to play all sorts of random and niche systems. Beyond just my GM experience, I've also been modelling in Hero Forge for quite some time for all sorts of characters in and out of tabletop games. I've made some music, most of which has been used for my tabletop games in one way or another, but I'm definitely still a beginner in that regard! As you can probably tell from my pfp, I'm a furry! I'm also a trans American Indian. You can call me Sushi or Jackie, I don't really mind. If you're looking for less rules, more cool, or some really really sad and messed up stories, I think I could be the GM for you!
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation will mostly be done in Session 0, but you should come up with a concept first! Think of who you want to be, don't worry about stats until we're in the Session 0 (unless you want to, in which case go ahead!) This game takes place in real world 1999 and you'll be playing as a mage who has just started their journey, so think of someone relatively ordinary. Someone like a tattoo artist, gardener, etc. Mages themselves don't always necessarily in wizards with staves, things like cosmology, cybernetics, and other things in the realm of possibilities that defy our current understanding of reality.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Discord will be needed for group chats with all the players along with streaming for ambience and music. We'll be using FoundryVTT but an account shouldn't be needed. This game is set in the USA, but extensive knowledge of the culture and landscape is not needed, lots of that will be provided to you over the table if you'd like it.
What Jackie brings to the table
Ambience and combat music will be a constant, expect lots of that! I do character voices but I'm not exactly a professional at it so keep that in mind. Rule of Cool is generally allowed, but for Mage especially I try to not go beyond the system's RAW. Expect a focus on social gameplay, problem solving, and semi-tactical semi-cinematic combat. Maps won't ALWAYS be used, but sometimes they will!
Homebrew rules
Combat has been simplified, initiative is more straightforward and linear but overall the system is relatively untouched. Homebrew rules might be added as we play to suit the needs of the story and characters, but this will be discussed ahead of time over the table.

How Jackie creates a safe table
I'll be sending out a content form (it covers lines and veils and such). Session 0 will mainly be covering character creation, along with making sure everyone understands the lines and veils. Safety cards will be done using the Table Safety module for FoundryVTT: https://foundryvtt.com/packages/table-safety
