About the adventure

The Ordning is broken. The Storm King refused to name an heir, and the All-Father answered by shattering the hierarchy of giant-kind. Now the giant tribes wage war across the North while dragons stir and opportunistic forces move in the shadows. This is a heavily revised version of Storm King’s Thunder, reimagined as a Shakespearean tragedy in the spirit of King Lear. The classic adventure has been restructured to give players more meaningful adventure hooks, clearer stakes, and far more impactful choices about which factions to support (or destroy). The campaign is extended so characters can reach level 15 through milestones, and the ending has been rewritten for a more satisfying conclusion. Expect a blend of wilderness exploration, giant politics and intrigue, and large-scale combat against cunning and massive foes. You will have abundant roleplay opportunities with a wide range of NPCs to interact with and your character backstories will be woven into the central conflict. We use 2024 rules. 3rd-party content is allowed with prior approval. Foundry VTT with custom maps, lighting, and audio. Session Zero is FREE and collaborative — your character’s history will matter. Will you restore the Ordning, claim a giant throne, or help the cities of the North end the giant threat once and for all?

About me

Greetings, adventurers! I’m Doug, your seasoned Dungeon Master, inviting you to join me at my virtual table for an unforgettable Dungeons & Dragons experience. I’ve been rolling dice and spinning tales since the 1980s, and my mission is simple: to draw you into a captivating, immersive game that keeps you coming back for more. Expect richly crafted NPCs, a chorus of voices and accents, intricate maps, a library of lore, and an infectious love for the game. As a lifelong devourer of fantasy fiction (and frustrated author), I’ve found D&D to be my ultimate creative playground. I delight in conjuring quirky characters, fearsome beasts, enigmatic prophecies, knotty mysteries, and breathtaking worlds. I thrive on weaving your character backstories into the campaign’s grand tapestry, letting you steer the story while I frame it within an epic narrative. So, grab a seat, and let’s craft a legendary tale together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will begin at 1st level. You may use standard array or point buy to generate stats. You are free to choose any official species and class from the Player's Handbook. Please talk to me (via message or DM in Discord) before you choose a character based on 3rd party content (Critical Role, Avantris, Chaosium, etc.) While these aren't always banned, some do not fit into the spirit of this adventure. I suggest keeping an open mind about your character and backstory. I will have a true 'session zero' where the players can discuss their character ideas, backstory, and possible connections to factions and one another. Please message me if you have any questions about character creation!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

After taking your seat at the table: (1) Join the Discord server. (2) Select "Storm King's Fall". (3) Link to the Foundry server will be available in the Discord chat. (4) Have fun!!

What Doug the DM brings to the table

Foundry VTT, D&D Beyond books, custom maps, art, voices, music, and a balanced mix of combat, story, and intrigue. I use 5e rules but am generous in my interpretations and value great role playing and creative choices over rigid application of the text.

Homebrew rules

I use Perkins crits - maximum damage + rolled damage. Healing potions: When administered to self, a potion will provide full healing if the player takes their entire action to consume it. A potion consumed by bonus action heals the amount rolled. Administering a potion to another character always takes an action and always results in full healing. Silvery Barbs is banned.

How Doug the DM creates a safe table

Once you are approved for the game, you will be sent a link to join the OnlyDragons discord server, where you will find additional information concerning character creation and campaign specific lore. You and I will have a brief one-on-one via Discord to cover lines and veils and make sure you are comfortable with the table rules, and the subject matter. I'll go over my open door policy and I can answer any questions you have about your character concept or backstory. At the end of each session we will have a brief period for Stars and Wishes where we discuss things as a group. My DMs are always open to discuss any issues you might be having one on one. My table is meant to be open and welcoming to everyone - please leave real world politics, religion, and social commentary at the door!
