About the adventure
In the bitterly cold northern region of Wildemount, no one is an island. People count on each other for survival because Mother Nature isn't doing anyone any favors. A little bit of detective work, a little bit of infiltration, and a significant amount of roleplay is to be expected in this early adventure. You'll work with your party to determine what is killing people and how to stop it, all while trying to stay warm enough to survive and keep all of your fingers and toes. This adventure is designed for players who are new to Dungeons and Dragons, but can be played by anyone. Starting at level 1, you'll discover your character's strengths and weaknesses. Learning the game's mechanics and rules is easy when your character explores and interacts with the world, other characters, and non-player characters. You'll advance to level 2 mid way through the adventure and experience the thrill of a character whose skills continue to grow.

Meet the Game Master
About me
I started playing DND about two years ago when some of my students asked me to sponsor the tabletop gamers club at our high school. As I learned about the game, I fell in love with the concept of shared story-telling, worldbuilding, and character development. Those are the things that I love about teaching English: those elements of stories that keep people coming back and make stories unforgettable. I've DMed both in live games at a physical table and on virtual platforms. The part that I enjoy the most is helping new players learn the game and watching as they gain confidence and develop their characters. I usually run lower-level games simply because that is the easiest entry point for new players. I look forward to playing with you!

Creating your character
Characters will need to be created before our first game session. We can work together if you are unfamiliar with character builders, but I recommend either DND Beyond or Roll20. Both places have simple character building tools. I'll use Roll20 for the virtual tabletop, but DND Beyond sheets can be used via the Beyond20 extension. Additionally, I can share my DND Beyond resources with you if needed. We'll use Discord for communication, including session zero, so we can nail down party composition there once we have a full party. Any of the three statistic generation methods are fine with me: standard array gives you numbers to plug into whichever stat you want (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8), you can manually roll for stats, or you can use point buy. If you're brand new and don't know what that means, we can work together. :) Finally, I suggest taking standard starting equipment. No homebrew items or spells, especially at level 1. However, if you want to take starting gold and buy items based on values from the Player's Handbook, that is okay too (it's just a little more cumbersome).
What to expect
Preparing for the session
1. Join the Discord server that we'll use for voice chat and session zero stuff 2. Make sure you can use the Roll20 virtual tabletop (free account should work fine) 3. Create your character (collaborating with other players via Discord) 4. Think about your character's motivations, background, and future goals
What Robert brings to the table
I can provide access to some digital content through DND Beyond, and I'll have interactive maps ready to go on Roll20. I use a website called Watch2Gether for ambient music. The website allows you to listen or not, adjust volume for yourself, and even change tracks (in case I forget to do so). I think that a good game needs a sense of urgency and a certain amount of peril. However, I also value humor. I'll lean into the lighthearted moments as much as I can. Sometimes that means silly voices, sometimes odd NPC names. Occasionally, I'll ask players for input when naming locations or NPCs so that you can get in on the fun too. The main thing is for everyone to have a good experience, so we'll strive to share the spotlight, work together, and celebrate each other's victories.
Homebrew rules
DND 5e has removed flanking rules in favor of weapon masteries. Therefore, flanking is no longer a rule. However, there are many other ways to gain advantage in combat situations. I allow drinking potions of health as a bonus action, but all other potions require a full action.

How Robert creates a safe table
I strive to maintain games that would be rated PG-13 (except for maybe violence during combat, which can get pretty ugly). On the Discord server, you'll have the opportunity to submit lines that you do not want crossed (like violence against children) and veils for things that may make you uncomfortable (like sexually explicit content). In the unlikely event that you need to do so, you can use a safety card (a digital tool) to interrupt what is happening and redirect to something else.
