About the adventure

New to Dungeons & Dragons? This game is built for you. In Dragon Delves: Death at Sunset, you’ll begin as a 1st-level adventurer near the quiet settlement of Redwood Watch, where something poisonous is spreading through the forest. The trees are sick, the locals are frightened, and the clues point toward something far more dangerous than wolves in the woods. This is a beginner-friendly D&D one-shot with a classic fantasy feel: brave villagers, strange tracks, dangerous choices, and the shadow of a dragon waiting at the heart of the problem. You do not need to know the rules before joining. I’ll guide you through character creation, dice rolls, combat, roleplay, and everything else as we play. My style is cinematic, clear, and player-focused. Expect atmospheric scenes, visual maps, character moments, a bit of humour, and exciting combat that teaches the game without overwhelming you. You’ll get chances to investigate, talk to NPCs, make meaningful choices, and step into your first real dragon story. This game is ideal for brand-new players, returning players, or anyone who wants a polished low-level D&D adventure without committing to a full campaign. Bring curiosity, a willingness to try things, and a heroic spirit. The forest needs help before sunset falls.

About me

I’m a dedicated Dungeon Master with around two years of active DM experience, currently running multiple campaigns side by side across different systems and styles of play. I’ve had a lifelong love of D&D lore, fantasy worlds, monsters, gods, planes, heroes, villains, and epic adventure. I’ve also been an avid sci-fi and fantasy reader since childhood, so rich worlds, mystery, strange places, and memorable characters are a big part of what I bring to the table. My preferred platform is Foundry VTT, where I create immersive online games with maps, lighting, music, tokens, journals, automation, and atmosphere. Depending on the group, my games can feel tactical and dynamic, almost like a video game, or lean more into theatre of the mind, roleplay, dungeon crawls, exploration, and epic mystery. I run module-based adventures for D&D 5e 2024, Pathfinder 2e, and Starfinder 2e, adapting them to suit the party and make player choices matter. I won’t claim to know every rule by heart. What I do promise is careful preparation, fair rulings, a willingness to check rules when needed, and a focus on keeping the game moving so everyone has fun. Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will start at level 1. This is a beginner-friendly one-shot, so you do not need to arrive with a finished character unless you want to. New players can choose from a set of ready-made characters, or I can help you make a simple hero before the game. If you already know how to create a character, you are welcome to bring your own, as long as it is suitable for a level 1 beginner adventure. For custom characters, use the 2024 Player’s Handbook / Free Rules. Please keep to official D&D options and avoid homebrew, joke characters, evil characters, or characters who would refuse to work with the party. This adventure works best with brave new adventurers who are willing to help a village in trouble. Stats can be created using standard array or point buy. Starting equipment comes from your class and background. Characters can be built in D&D Beyond, in Foundry VTT, or with help from me before the session. At the start of the game I will do a quick character check, explain the basics of your sheet, and make sure everyone understands how to roll, move, attack, cast spells, and use their abilities. No rules knowledge is expected.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Create or log into Discord We will use Discord for voice chat, table chat, links, and any questions before the session. A working microphone is needed, and headphones are strongly recommended to avoid echo. Join the Discord server before game time I will send the invite link after booking. Please join early so we can sort out voice, introductions, and any character questions before the adventure begins. Use a laptop or desktop if possible We will play using Foundry VTT in your web browser. You do not need to buy Foundry or install anything, but it works best on a computer rather than a phone or tablet. Chrome is recommended. Choose how you want to handle your character New players can use a ready-made level 1 character, or I can help you make one before the game. Returning players may bring a level 1 character built with the 2024 Player’s Handbook / Free Rules, using standard array or point buy. Arrive 10–15 minutes early if you are new I’ll help you check your character sheet, explain the Foundry controls, show you how to roll dice, move your token, attack, cast spells, and ask questions during play. Bring the right mindset No rules knowledge is expected. Just bring curiosity, teamwork, and a willingness to jump into the story. This is a beginner-friendly one-shot, so learning as we play is part of the game.

What QuestKernel brings to the table

I provide a fully prepared, beginner-friendly game with Foundry VTT maps, tokens, visual handouts, ambient music, sound effects, and clear guidance throughout the session. You do not need to know the rules before joining — I will explain what your options are, help with rolls, and keep the game moving so you can focus on the adventure. My GM style is cinematic, welcoming, and player-focused. I like dramatic scenes, memorable NPCs, exciting choices, and a table where new players feel comfortable asking questions. I use character voices where they add fun, but I care more about making NPCs clear, entertaining, and easy to interact with than doing a perfect accent. Combat will be exciting but not overwhelming. For this beginner one-shot, I will explain movement, actions, spells, attacks, and saving throws as they come up. I enjoy tactical combat with meaningful choices, but I will not bury new players in rules jargon or punish people for learning. I generally follow the rules, especially for fairness, but I also embrace the Rule of Cool when a player has a creative idea that fits the scene. If you want to try something bold, clever, heroic, or funny, tell me what you are attempting and we’ll work out the best roll together. Players can expect a polished fantasy adventure with atmospheric storytelling, teamwork, danger, humour, and a proper heroic finale. My goal is for you to finish the session understanding D&D better and feeling like your character mattered.

Homebrew rules

I keep homebrew light, especially for beginner games. The aim is to make the game clear, fun, and fair rather than overload new players with extra rules. I mainly use the following table rules: Potions: Drinking a healing potion yourself can be done as a bonus action. Giving a potion to another character still takes an action. Creative actions: I support the Rule of Cool when it fits the scene. If you want to swing from a rope, distract a monster, shove scenery over, protect another character, or try something unusual, describe what you are doing and I will call for a fair roll. Critical hits: We use normal D&D critical hit rules unless agreed otherwise before the game. Death saves: Standard D&D death saves. I do not make death saves harder for beginner one-shots. Rules calls: If a rule is unclear, I will make a quick ruling at the table so the game keeps moving. After the session, I can check the exact rule if needed. For this one-shot, the game will be very close to standard D&D rules, with small quality-of-life rulings to keep play smooth and beginner friendly.

Safety

How QuestKernel creates a safe table

Player comfort matters more than any scene, monster, or plot twist. This is a beginner-friendly adventure, and I want the table to feel welcoming, respectful, and easy to play at. Before the game, I will ask players to share any Lines and Veils privately if they want to. A Line is content that should not appear in the game at all. A Veil is content that can exist but should fade to black or stay off-screen. You do not need to explain personal reasons for any boundary. During play, players can use X, N, and O safety tools by message or voice: X means stop or remove the content immediately. N means slow down, change direction, or check in. O means everything is okay and you are enjoying the scene. You can also message me privately on Discord at any time. If something feels uncomfortable, confusing, too intense, or not fun, I will adjust without making it awkward. For this one-shot, the expected tone is heroic fantasy adventure with danger, tension, and a dragon threat, but not grimdark horror. I avoid graphic gore, sexual content, cruelty for shock value, and anything designed to upset players rather than challenge characters. After the game, I am happy to do a quick check-in, answer questions, and hear what players enjoyed or found difficult. New players are especially welcome to ask rules questions, request help, or say when they need a moment. The goal is an exciting adventure where everyone feels included and safe enough to have fun.
