About the adventure

Setting: - This game takes place in Ambraza, a war-torn world grappling with the recent destruction of an entire pantheon. A few years ago, during this conflict, an archangel fell to earth. The crash created a rift, or fault, between the Material and Astral planes where terrain and time are fluid, ever-changing. - The so-called Astral Fault is of great interest to the glory-seeking and power-hungry. Some hope to find this angel or at least recover an artifact from their body. Others hope to restore the region and assist those displaced or otherwise affected by the Fault. - We find our players preparing to enter the Fault, though your motivations for doing so are your own to determine. We'll be adventuring through this strange place, tackling a variety of foes, grappling with great magic, and uncovering mysteries left behind by commoner and deity alike. Experience: - This game, and my GM style, is suited to new and experienced players alike! I am not a stickler for the rules and prefer that we focus our efforts on having fun and creating an enjoyable story that'll stick with everyone. With that, an expert knowledge of the mechanics can certainly help, but isn't necessary! If you are new to 5e, we can talk through it and learn together. Theme: - High Fantasy with some Steampunk, Gritty Fantasy, and Grimdark elements. This is strongly inspired by the film Stalker/book Roadside Picnic but thrown into a high fantasy setting.

About me

Hi there! I've been running games for eight years, mostly dabbling with 5e/5.5e and homebrew systems. Typically, I make up my own worlds rather than running games in the Forgotten Realms. From steampunk to superheroes, and even the Wild West, I enjoy stepping out of the traditional high fantasy setting from time to time. I strive to be player-centric and specialize in introducing new players to TTRPGs, though I've run many games for experienced players as well. I pride myself on styling games around what the players want. While some want loads of combat and opportunities to showcase their characters' abilities, others are invested in lore and roleplay. I work to meet all of these wants and needs!

Character creation

Creating your character

I prefer coming into the first session with everyone's characters made. Not only does this let us get straight into the story, but players have the option to reveal their characters as they see fit in-game. If they are a Warlock, but don't want the others to know that, they can keep their cards close to their chest. With that said, we'll come into the first session with characters already made. For this game I'm offering a free session zero where we can make characters, go over any questions, and get set up for a great first session. We'll make characters following the 2024 D&D Player's Handbook and start at Level 3. I encourage players to take a look at 5e.tools, a great resource that has everything you need for character creation. I encourage you to use a physical sheet, tablet, or D&D Beyond where we'll host our encounters.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I've set up a Discord server with channels made for both running sessions, making characters, and more. So you'll need a Discord to join up there! Also, we'll host our encounters on D&D Beyond so players should make an account on there even if you plan on using physical sheets and dice.

What Nik brings to the table

I try to create immersion through ambient music, character voices, detailed descriptions of our surroundings, and more. Mechanically, I embrace the Rule of Cool. I like to operate within reason but without the pressure of every single moment being dictated by rules. I like to encourage and reward players' creativity so if you have ideas on how to approach something, even if you're not sure that it'd be possible, go for it! We can talk it out and find a middle ground to keep things fun, light, but not so chaotic that we're having trouble following what the heck is going on.

Homebrew rules

Here are a few things that may be a bit different at my table than a by-the-book game: - Drinking potions are a Bonus Action - Critical hits max out the weapon's die, then you roll another. So if you get a crit with a rapier, you start at 8 damage and roll another d8. - To add more stakes to encounters, I ask players to keep the result of their Death Saving Throws to themselves, adding pressure on the rest of the party to address their fallen companion.

How Nik creates a safe table

As well as an optional form for players where they can list out their interests and limits, I'll also send over a Lines and Veils document for us to write out what type of content we aren't comfortable with. As the campaign progresses, I'll resend the document with the reminder that we can add/change the doc over time. In our character creation/session zero phase, we can discuss limits further, and I'll answer any questions about content, tone, etc. that players have. For X, N, and O's, players can make these signals on video, send via chat to the whole group, or in a private message to myself, whatever is most comfortable for them. This gives us the opportunity to pivot away from that content, take a break, or whatever else is needed. I also make an effort to check in with players over the course of the game! Not just with comfort but also how they're enjoying the game so that we can make adjustments as needed, ensuring everyone is getting the most out of the experience.
